Any good instructors in Sydney Australia?

I think I asked this before, but my immigration is now iminent (yeah fiance!!)
We are moving probably in the next 2 months and I'll be in the Sydney area pretty soon.

Could someone inform me of the scene, classes, workshops, restaurants, performance opportunites etc for this wonderful city?

    Many Thanks (Cheers)
    :)

Who I would study with if I was in Sydney:

    Amera, http://www.ameraspalace.com.au/archi...out_amera.html

    or

    Jrisi, http://www.hathordancestudio.com.au/index.html

I was pretty close to moving there a couple of years for the opportunity to regularly study with these two teachers.

Hi and Welcome (in advance) to Sydney!

It is a very large area to cover so, it really depends on what area of Sydney you end up in. I second Amera as a recommendation, she is a very talented dancer, teacher, and just a overall sweet woman. I have dome some classes with her and her teaching is first class. She is located in both inner Sydney suburbs and also Western Sydney. Another option for central Sydney it Terezka. I don't have her details off hand but if you are interested i can find them. Also there is Leonie Sukan who organises the Sydney Middle Eastern Dance Festival every year. She teaches a lot of Turkish style, but also cabaret. I guess it really depends on what you want to learn?
As far as the scene goes, there are plenty of events, venues, performance ops etc.
If you head a little South of sydney to Wollongong, then look me up!

    Cheers
    Julie

Wow, I was just checking the teacher listings at Amera's Palace and she has certainly expanded as well as the number of other teachers listed. Although it has been awhile, I worked in Sydney for 6 months and got a little familiar with the dance scene . . . which has expanded a lot since I was downunder 10 years ago! Amera, Leonie annd Tereska were all there at the time . . . didn't meet Amera as she was in the ME somewhere.

How is the Fringe Festival in Sydney? Does anyone dance at that? I went to watch Sarah Hamilton during one of those. Wonder where she is these days?

Took a class with Terezka too and it was lots of fun. Here's her website: http://www.danseorientale.com.au/ . . . looks like she has lots to offer too! Wow, trips to Bali, India and Egypt are available . . .

Here's a link for the Sydney Medfest: http://www.sydmedfest.com/

There is lots to do downunder and I think you will have a great time exploring the opportunities. I know that I explored a lot on the trains and buses, which helped me to learn more about Sydney (also helped that our company put us up in flats in North Sydney just across the bridge from the CBD) . . . of course, I was a bit chicken to rent a car and drive on the opposite side of the road than in the States, hehe, but if you are going to live there than you will have to do it.

    Have fun!

As far as the scene goes Terezka, Amera and Leonie are the main master teachers and have been around for ages. They performed during the golden era of the 80s in Sydney.

Terezka has live music dance classes once a month on a Tuesday now. You can check out a video of Terezka at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixWJF5nyiVw

The next charity bellydance ball is on sat 22nd September.

Restaurants are scattered around. There is a concentration at Surry Hills but from what I heard they don't like paying very much.

So do you have a video of yourself performing? You could get yourself listed on Amera's books. Or maybe you can contact Jamal Zraika who is a drummer. He might have some small gigs available

I'm not sure where in Australia Paivi is at the moment, but she is a great teacher. If you have an opportunity, take her class or workshop.

Sarah Hamilton is still sydney based and is a teacher of Hilal style dance, she is a talented and lovely dancer.
Last I heard Paivi was around Gosford just 2 hours north of sydney, I hear only good things of her.
If I was going there I would most likely look up Amera or Terezka. you won't be at a loss dancewise.

i haven't had the chance to study w/ amera (though i've heard great things).... but i've taken some workshops w/ her protege, sahara, when she came to nz, and she's a very good teacher with loads of energy and a vibrant style. i enjoyed her and would recommend her classes highly.
