Looking for a Teacher who can drum
Hello!
I looking for someone who can teach me how to play the doumbek.
I've been dancing for years now, and for many reasons think learning the workings of the drum would enhance my dancing, and my connection to other dancers~
..And perhaps learning from a belly dancer who also drums I think would be best for helping one who hasn't drummed before and just danced to make the connection between the body and the instrument...?
I'm not denying drum teachers though :D I just really wish to learn!
So I'm looking for anyone within reasonable (under an hour, if possible) of Mount Airy/Frederick Maryland.
Thank you! I apologize for the sillyness of how I wrote my message.

Re: Looking for a Teacher who can drum
If you are willing/able to do a workshop type experience, I believe the Oasis Dance Camps feature drum lessons in addition dancing to live drums. The head teacher Cassandra Shore dances (of course) and drums herself, although the accompaniment and drum lessons are with percussionist Nicole LeCorgne (who wouldn't have such a sweet gig if she didn't have a LOT of insight into working with dancers...exactly what you're looking for, yes?..g.:).

Re: Looking for a Teacher who can drum
If you are wanting to learn the doumbek to enhance your dance, you may be better off just getting someone to teach you rhythm identification. Otherwise all the time will be spent trying to teach you drumming technique which isn't that easy, unlike an african drum where beginners can generally pick it up relatively quickly.
You can get get rhythm cds to teach yourself.

Re: Looking for a Teacher who can drum
If you are willing to consider a musician, you could contact Daveed Korup who lives in Baltimore. I have greatly benefitted from taking drum classes with him - he somehow brought out my sense of rhythm, which had been hidden for all my life, which is really a major miracle. He is not a native ME drummer, but to me, it was more important that his life is dedicated to teaching. And, he's a nice guy. You can reach him at drumfest@yahoo.com
