Thread: Dancing in Egypt: what kind of pay?

I am really interested to know what types of work opportunities exist in Egypt for foreign dancers these days? In addition to dancers who dane in the big hotels over there, how much would a dancer get paid to dance in restaurants and boat cruises? Has anyone had recent experience working as a dancer in Cairo or other places in Egypt?

I'd like to know, too. The last word I got from someone who used to work in cabarets over there was that an average Egyptian dancer in an average cabaret would make $10 per short show, and usually do one an hour for 5 hours.

$50 for a night? I don't know how much that translates to, given the Egyptian cost of living, but...I can understand why a dancer might resort to prostitution.

Or do prostitutes resort to dancing? Makes you wonder...

Thank you for posting that Jessedan. I was curious too about the work opportunities for foreign dancers overseas.

One of the things Leila of Cairo said was that most belly dancers (who are DANCERS) have a boyfriend or husband who helps them.
The busier dancers have to pay their whole band and entourage out of what they make....and the band and entourage are considered an important part of what makes a belly dancer a star...the bigger the band, the more star power she has....she needs a makeup artist, wardrobe person etc etc...so she has more people to swish in with her when she arrives...
Those are the ones doing the big weddings etc. They actually have a lot of financial obligations and responsibilities.
