I wonder if it's a typo. A missing zero? Still not a good offer but at least within the realm of sanity.

That's what I'm talking about!

I did send a professional reply and suggested that perhaps searching locally for a belly-gram might help him someone to perform at the party. I also explained that a professional dancer would not be perusing craig's list for gigs and that if craig's list was the way he wanted to go that he should change the ad heading to "belly dance beginner or belly dance hobbiest." I suggested that based on the pay he was offering no one but a beginner would respond. I wished him Good Luck and gave a gentle reminder that he WILL get what he pays for.

I'll let you know if I get a response......

I don't know... suggesting a beginner or hobbiest? Sh!t, I'm a hobbiest and even I wouldn't do that job for 20.00 + tips (if I lived in the area).

Yeah, most hobbyist dancers I know would cringe at that request! I do know some "pros," on the other hand, who would probably say giddy up ..c::

$20! well... My old troupe leader would "pimp us out" at $30 for a 20 min set...

Geeze! And I thought bellygram prices in my area were dirt cheap, at least they're not THAT cheap (talking about the craiglist ad not Ahmber's post)!

Ours pimps us out for about $50/dancer for a 20 min set.

While I probably would've responded pretty similarly ("you get what you pay for" is my mantra!), and I don't see anything wrong with telling the guy that he wouldn't get a professional-caliber dancer, we do live in a sad world where the difference between good dancing and bad is not quite so simple as beginner and pro.

Sometimes, I cringe when I hear "amateur" or "hobbyist" used as an insult because I think a great deal of our industry's problems stem from a pressure to "go pro," and to do so way too soon. That, and, I also secretly envy my hobbyist friends who have the luxury of walking away from the dance when it makes them crazy ,r:;

I did not say anything derogatory about any dancer who is not professional performer. My respect for the effort involved with learning the dance well and my love of the dance would never allow me to be so caddy. To assume because a dancer has not or will not go pro means they aren't good enough or deserving of respect is ridiculous. I am a student since last June (read new dancer) and since I am not of the age (@ 48) or the body type (thin but have the stretched abdominal skin of a woman who has carried two babies) I will never be more than a hobbiest. I emailed an ad response and suggested, first, that he price pro dancers in the area and, second, that he change the title of his ad to reflect that he is not willing to pay a professonal dancers fee. I also added that it was most likely that he would only have students respond. I don't understand the mindset of the dancers who cannot fathom that every word on here is not somehow directed at them or written about them.

The thought of taking the job actually crossed my mind for a glorious minute. I have a good friend who does horror make up professionally. I have a broomstick skirt and a tatty hip scarf. I would have loved to show up and act just like the drunks a restaurants do when they get up with the dancers. "WOOO shake what God gave ya!" Then I regained my sanity and recognized that would make all dancers, professional level, student, or hobbiest look really bad. But imagining it was just great fun!! (Sorry in advance to whomever I offended with this reply)

I wasn't offended by Suhira and I would consider myself a hobbyist/semi-pro since I have a full-time day job. Who got offended? Did the comment get deleted?

I wasn't offended. I totally got what you were saying. His offer was SILLY! A silly offer for anyone @ any level of this dance. You should have given him the #'s to the highest paid dancers in the area and let him get told again and again the highest quotes. So he himself could see that his offer was in fact- SILLY!
