    Leila Gamal Workshop Oct 28th

    Hi all!

Leila Gamal will be at the NRDC in Park Forest on October 28th. Her workshops are entitled, "the art of bellydance" and she usually teaches "concepts" as opposed to choreo and technique. For example, in the last two workshops she taught the concepts of outward vs inner energy and reverse dynamics.

The workshop is from 1:30-3:30 and cost $30. 708.283.2800 to register or visit www.naamarose.com for deets.

Leila is one of the most amazing dancers I've seen, and an exceptional teacher. Chicago dancers, you gotta go!

I'm not sure about the hot coals, but I would follow her through the desert!!!

    I'm going!

I was waffling about this workshop, but I'm going to do it. I took workshops with Leila Gamal when I was a "Bobby Doll" wannabee, and just loved her. I just gotta get myself organized and get a bunch of stuff done for the Ava Fleming workshops - wasn't sure if I could take the time. But, hey, that's what I've got "staff" for (read slaves ..l;, ), right? It's only one short afternoon, and I'd really love to be in her class again. Off to check the website. Thanks for the reminder, Sumaya!

    ... Bobby Doll?

I'm hoping to be able to attend!

But, er... (revealing my ignorance) What's a Bobby Doll?

Or is that a play on Barbie doll?

Okay, you can all laugh at me now ..l;,

Erika you wouldn't make it in time, its about an hour, to an hour fifteen depending on traffic :(

Zohra, a "Bobby Doll" is a play on Barbie Doll, and is a nickname given to the fabulous dancers who have studied with the great late Ibraham Farrah, otherwise knows as Bobby ;)

The whole Bobby Doll thing started in the late 80's. I was in Egypt and happened to be hanging around students who studied with a rival teacher. They used the "Bobby Doll" term as an insult. So a bunch of us got together and conspired before the next Bobby workshop, and we all turned up wearing pink T-shirts that said "Bobby Doll" on them. We're proud of the name!!

Hard to tell. For example, at Rak East I met Angelika Nemeth, who I would definitely call a Bobby Doll. She's carrying on the artistry beautifully. And there's Fahtiem, Habiba, and lots of others. But sadly, many many dancers don't know that Ibrahim Farrah even existed. .w.:

And I'm so grateful that when I found my way to NYC as a nerdy advanced beginner dancer, Bobby took me under his wing and taught me sooooo much.

    Hope I'm registered!

Hey Sumaya, I called the studio and left a message - never got a return call. ..cr.: So I went to the website, finally found the place to register (truthfully, I didn't think it was very clear how to do it until after a surfed around for a while), and went ahead and registered online. It did say I would get a confirming email within 48 hours - and since I just registered yesterday, I'm hoping my confirmation is "in the mail." Soooo, if I don't get that confirmation - I'm showing up anyway. Maybe if you're at the studio you can take a peek at the registration list and see if my name shows up? I don't want to miss Leila Gamal this time!

Leila Gamal is a real artist, both in performing and teaching. She is *not* well-known but should be. I'm not surprised that there's nothing on youtube. I don't think you'll be sorry if you attend her workshop. I've been a fan for decades!

Man, shes good. I love how natural her combinations feel and flow, they always make sense to me in the choreo.

That was two hours of belly dance bliss for me. Brought back all kinds of memories of workshops past with Bobby Farrah. And Leila just presents it all so well. Good classic moves, lovely choreo, and a very nice lady at the front of the room. I would have loved to go crazy zilling with her, though. Maybe next time.

Tell Ellie I think she's got a wonderful studio! I'm envious.

Wish I could have been there! My only consolation is that I was attending a master class with Faten Salama instead.

I spoke with Leila about sponsoring her in a full day workshop with a hafla in the evening. She was very interested. Maybe you'll be free to come out to the Chicago area for that. Watch this space for future announcements!
