Thread: Drop in classes in NY (in february...)?

Hey all

I will be traveling to NYC from the 5th until the 11th of february 2011.
Does anyone know where I could take a class/workshop in NYC during that time?

I really do not have a clue as to who teaches in New York (except for Ranya Renee).
If you can give me some names of dancers who teach there, I will be happy to look for their classes myself.

Oh, and last but not least : where do I go shopping for BD stuff in NY? (Dvd's, cd's, clothes,...)

Shopping - Belly Dance America | Home right in the middle of the fashion district; 36th and 37th Streets feature a mind-boggling array of fabric and trim stores, including Spandex House and World just across the street from each other. Mood Fabrics is upstairs (as is BD America), which can be a bit confusing for the first-time visitor from the countryside ;-) I walked up and down the street for quite a while before I figured out how to work that ...

I'd check out Anahid Sofian, Morocco, Dalia Carella and Aszmara. They are deservedly famous for Turkish (esp. Romani) and Vintage Orientale.

what style of dance? NYc hosts a lot of good teachers...i wish more of them would migrate to the island!!

I dont think there are any theathers with regular BD shows.

Check out the bellyqueen website, they have schedule of regular shows at Jebon on Wednesday nights.

There are frequently dancers at Lafayette Grill, and I think Kaeshi Chai (of Bellyqueen) has a residency or something at Je'Bon on St. Marks. (These were the two locations for dinner/after parties during the Theatrical Belly Dance Conference that Anasma and Ranya Renee organized this past summer.) Have fun!

I can imagine they are not in the normal cd/dvd shops...

Solstice Studio has the Solar, Lunar, and Fundamental of Belly Dance DVDs. Other than that, I don't think there are any stores that have BDSS or WDNY DVDs.

i just remembered: I bought my very very first bellydance cd in new york, and i'm not telling you how many years ago. just in the cd store. and i was soo happy (and it was an utterly crappy cd). so far i'd been making do with TAPES from my teacher. lol.

You can drop in to any of The Bellyqueen classes. Some sessions there is choreography taught over several weeks, but some sessions are just combos. You migh want to call the teacher before to ask.

and you can always drop in to Ranya Renee's classes at Ripley studios.

most teachers have a drop in rate just email or call them and ask

zoe, most teachers with a semester shedule will make an examption for people from out of town/on holiday. i know i would. so just email them and ask. i've been able to take drop in classes here and there that way too. mostly they are happy that a foreigner traveling throug is interested in them!

Don't forget to check out Azza's classes. She teaches a solid int/adv class on Sundays. She is an excellent teacher. Find her at www.azzabellydance.com.

Dalia has been on Wed nights for some time, but I don't know what studio space she will be using in Feb, though. She is excellent, too (as you know).

Serena's Studio has a couple of wonderful teachers; Zenaide, Layla Mary, and Dorit immediately spring to mind.
