I am soooo late checking in on this one! ,r:; It was an amazing halfa!! I've never been to one of Zayna's haflas that wasn't great, but there was a lot of energy in that room last week! Fantastic dancers, lots of happy faces, JC wore his kilt! ..g.: And I got to make a fool out of myself once again by making an unscheduled appearance in the show. (Why does Zayna let me DO that??? ) It was a great time, everyone, and thanks to Kara and Cat for sharing their table with all of us.

And thanks to Eva and Essam for letting me, Anisah and Amirah sit outside on their new patio for a couple of hours after the hafla. We haven't had a "just us girls" opportunity to talk in a long time.

Hope to see you all next month at the Sphinx!! Great time!!

Those are great Pics! I think I need to be standing up taking pics the next time. Where I was siting I did not have a good view, the pics where not coming out. They were too dark.

Zayna, Is there room in November's line-up? I would love to perform! I miss you, and the Sphinx!

Amazing, I feel like I just debuted there--but it will be a year's time this December! Can you believe it?

Did everyone remember to call and reserve their tables for the Dec. 1st Sphinx Hafla? I don't have a table this time...I'm filling in for Josh in the DJ booth. *gulp*

Donna, if you need a place to sit you're welcome at my table! You'll have to "endure" my gaggle of cousins but I think you could manage Let me know, I'll call and extend the reservation!

so as soon as everybody gets back to me I'll post the line-up.

. . .There won't be open dancing w/ DJ Josh this month. . .
but you'll have Kara, Zayna, and maybe Donna in the DJ booth!

A few different styles will be presented this month: Turkish, Fusion, Am Cab
I'm excited!!!
. . .now to figure out what to wear!!!

So anybody who just showed up, got a seat.
But it was too late to for the people on the waiting list.

50 cancellations 3 hours prior to an event is not cool! I know the Sphinx prepared food for all those people. What a waste of money and time and just a disappointment all the way around. I know there are certain circumstances where emergency's crop up, but I doubt 50 people had 50 emergencies.

yeah, Eva was pretty upset.
I went into the kitchen after the Hafla-
they had SO many take home boxes full of food.
She was saying she might go to paypal for reservations, or get a credit card to make the reservations or something?

It was a waste of food,
It was also sad for all the people on the waiting list who couldn't get a table-
and couldn't get there with the short notice.
Better Luck this month!!!

Sphinx Haflas will be continuing in 2008!

I think because the Sphinx has typically been sold out every month, folks are hedging their bets and making reservations even though they aren't sure they'll actually be going - so as not to get turned away. I know I showed up one night without a reservation and Eva said she'd try to find me a spot. There were reservations cards on all of the tables, but as the night went on, there were many tables still empty. OR, someone was royally p.o.'d at the Sphinx and did it out of spite. Either way, it stinks.

Thanks so much, Babs. Actually, I have two people coming with me on Saturday, one is one of my hula partners, and the other is a student. So I'd better make my own reservations. However, if you want me to harrass your gaggle of cousins, let me know. Having almost 40 cousins myself, I'm pretty good at relative harrassment! ..g.:

I'm glad everyone is safe!
No worries- we can redo December at the January Hafla!!!

The December Hafla quickly turned into a Ha-flea, but turned out OK!

About 50 people had to cancel their reservations tonight.
And ALL the performers had to cancel due to the ice storm
EXCEPT-
-Sheila & Illiana (a duet tribal sword dance)
-the owner of Sphinx (a Saidi cane dance)
-and myself (I did a 15 minute set)

And BIG Thanks to Kara who drove a long way to DJ tonight!

It turned out to be real fun tho-
There were others dancers there, who came to watch the show. . .

So the second half was filled with VOLUNTEERS-
-Donna Diva performed a MEAN Hula Dance :D
-Zayna, Sable, Deb, & Basia performed "Zeina" & "Sahra Saidi"
-Illana performed a solo
-Aris & Seika performed an improv duet
-Sable performed with candles to Gothic Music
-Cat performed with a veil
-and Donna performed with a poi-veil!

yep! I said gothic music at Sphinx!
there were also moments of Irish & Russian Dancing during open dance
and some (loss for words) snake arm event .w.:

. . .and now the January Sphinx Hafla's line-up is FULL!

Oh man that is awesome! Beacuse in cclass this week, I did a survey of my students as to who thought theat their first solo was going to happen in 2008. Illiana raised her hand. Who knew it would sneak into 2007!?! I am sorry I missed it! I hope everyone is safe. I am glad to hear you made lemonade out of lemons. We were doing the same up in Milwaukee.

That haf-flea was TONS of fun! It was actually more like what I think a hafla should be - impromptu performances with costumes put together by what could be found in everyone's dance bags, CD collection, and the trunk of their car! (BTW, Nilaja, for her solo, Cat used one of your veils that I was selling for you -- which were in the trunk of my car -- and liked it so much she bought it!!..l;, ) Not to take anything away from the performers who prepare to dance and come in full bling -- but there were some pretty awesome performances out there on the spur of the moment. The student that braved the weather with me for her first Sphinx hafla had a great time -- so we'll be coming back in January and bringing a group.

And, uh, the snake arms event? We need to repeat it in January! With a bigger line - EVERYBODY UP -- NOW SNAKE THOSE ARMS -- DO THE WAVE!! ..l;, OK, I had had two gin and tonics by then - and we're all friends right?
