CALL TO PERFORMERS!
MassRaqs 2011 Opening Celebration
Friday, September 9th 2011, 8PM
Location: World Rhythms Dance & Fitness, 313 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA

This “call to performers” is for the Friday night MassRaqs event to be held on Friday, September 9th 2011, at 8:30pm. This Friday night show will be followed by a party, where guests will be able to enjoy live music and open dancing.

Submission guidelines (incomplete submissions will not be considered):
Please provide – all at once, in the same email or envelope:
1. A one-paragraph description of your piece
2. Your music

a. If dancing to live music: your song choice for the band.
b. If dancing to CD: Your music song title, artist’s name, and the mp3 file.

3. Length of Set: 5-7 minutes (same for soloists or troupes)
4. Your one-paragraph bio (approximately 100-150 words)
5. Your promotional photo, high resolution (please, one image only)
6. Your sample video in a link or DVD

a. Video can be from a rehearsal, a practice session at home or a performance.
b. The video sample can be from a past show, but we would prefer and encourage your MassRaqs performances to be new pieces to be debuted at MassRaqs.

The main criteria for selection are:
a. We want to display the talent of the dancers that come to participate in MassRaqs. To perform, dancers are expected to participate in at least 3 of 7 MassRaqs workshops. We encourage all dancers planning to attend workshops to submit a proposal to perform. This will enhance your learning experience through the weekend. Some of the MassRaqs faculty will attend the show, creating a space for individual feedback on your dancing during the workshops later in the weekend.
b. We aim to present a diverse range of personal styles. The more detailed your description of your dance is, the more we will be able to gauge what it will contribute to the overall performance.
c. Dancers should demonstrate a minimum level of technical competency, professional demeanor and the ability to entertain.
d. Folklore performances are highly encouraged.
e. No personal invitations to perform will be extended for this show.
f. All selected dancers will be expected to sign a performance contract. No personal photo or video will be allowed. Professional photo and video will be taken during the event to be used by MassRaqs for promotional purposes in the future, and made available to performing dancers by the video artist and professional photographer.
g. Submissions from groups, duets, etc., are welcomed.

The selection of the dancers will be made by the entire MassRaqs team.


The firm deadline for submissions is July 30th 2011. Selected dancers will be notified in mid-August 2011.
