Thread: Paid DC, VA, MD gig needed

DC Metro Dancers...

$$ gig needed . Here's the deal:

On 12/7 my company let me go due to end of year budget cuts. (Merry Christmas.) They gave me a great recommendation and very little cash. Although I perfom a couple of times a month....I need to bring in some dancing dosh. Anyone know of a gig or need a sub?

I am very sorry to hear about that.

As it seems dance will be a primary source of income until you can find another job (I'm guessing), it is even more important for you to negotiate firmly for professional rates to avoid falling into a vicious cycle of being so desperate for work that pay doesn't matter.

Right now, many restaurants are paying $100+ (prices have been as high as $150) for one show for a local dancer. In the case of private parties, many dancers are charging around $225 for one local show, adding more for travel and other expenses. Many dancers charge more for corporate events, weddings, and other special instances (at least $300).

Are you on yahoo groups like dcprodancers, mdprodancers and raqsbaltimore? These are good places to find out about current opportunities.

Well, I'm in the DC area. We have limited events posted. But I'll check to see what Sahara Dance company is doing. Casablanca in Northern VA is good too. But I'll check for you. What's your email?

Casablanca, like other Moroccan restaurants in the area, does not pay current professional rates. I don't recommend it for dancers who actually need money, or any dancer who actually wants to be compensated for all the hard work s/he does to perform a show.

In the last several months I haven't heard of anything promising / new opening up in the DC/VA area. I'm not actively seeking anything out, but I have been keeping my eyes/ears open. What IS promising is that the area professionals all agreed to start regular shows only at or above the $100/20 min show. It's nice to have everyone on the same page. :)

I finally have a full-time pay-the-rent job!

Even better news....We're really growing the dance program in my Maryland gig. Classes are now sold out and there's a waiting list! All very exciting.
