Many years ago, Sheque of Touch the Earth, I think Daveed of Turku and some of the Zafira girls had the idea to hold a "dance and drum" weekend at Sheque's farm sanctuary in VA. It was an amazing weekend of music, dance, classes, parties, friendship - and some time that weekend, the idea of Darboukastan was born - a home for those who share a love of music and dance. Every year, the first weekend in June, dancers and musicians from all over come together and celebrate Darboukastani Independence Days (DID). It is a wonderful event, and has a very special place in my heart. I don't think I can think of more warm and welcoming people than Sheque and his family. And, I still recall my very first hafla under the stars, with Turku (whom I had only known from CDs) playing.

That's soooo kewl Steffi! I think this is year #7- not sure about that. This is my first year of going- and I'm so excited that it is practically in my backyard! Do you know Scott?( is he Sheque?) He's been so sweet about answering all of my questions:) I do know Daveed will not be there this year ( someone else is covering his classes) and Zafira will be represented by Olivia and another dance sister of that i have not met. Turku will be there this year- i have never heard them live-. We did decide we are going to spend the night saturday night- so we can hang out at the hafla and soak up the ambience....Do you ever go back?
Hi Dunyah! it sounds like we couild be neighbors! I'l check it out!

I have only been to DID-1 - it's more than 8 hours from Pittsburgh, and that's beyond my little car and myself. Yes, Scott = Sheque - I have met him under his SCA name, and that's what sticks. He's a wonderful person.
This year, you will have Sylvanus teach drumming - he's fabulous, and rather charming ;-) As for music - Carmine (from NYC, of Djinn), Melissa (from Pittsburgh, with Ishtar) and Denys (formerly of Pittsburgh, now with Turku) will be there for melody instruments - all of them great musicians and even more cherished friends. You will have a great time! Dancers of Zafira will be Olivia and Christine - both great dancers, and fabulous teachers. (I worship Christine.)
Ah, I am green with envy!!!
