Car parking for JOY?
Ok so its nearly a month to go until the October JOY and I like to plan things in advance, especially if they involve stressful driving.
I can only afford 1 day of JOY and I can't stretch to accommodation either so I'm going to have to do a hideous round trip, starting off at some ungodly hour, to get there on time.
Anyway, I know Saltaire of yore and I know that parking is awful there. I've checked the JOY site for their car parking advice but wondered if any experienced Bhuzzers have any useful advice for the JOY novice.

I suppose we are lucky ( tho' he isn't )that we have a disabled disc to aid parking but if the few spots are taken, it sure isn't easy. have you tried that car park by the mill.
Is the train a no-no.pricy I suppose.
But have you tried posting here and on tribe ( when it's up!) for a car share.Sorry we are full up.
Otherwise get there bl**dy early and have a big breakfast at the butty shop.

Re: Car parking for JOY?
park it at the ibis and walk there (by the water, about 15min, quite nice, but dont try it with a suitcase).
we (read: beatrice) have always parked just in the streets around the venue, maybe like a block or two removed max, without much problems

Re: Car parking for JOY?
Thanks Liz. Its good to know these things. Its a while since I've been to Saltaire but I used to know it quite well in my pre-driving days.I suppose we are lucky (tho' he isn't )that we have a disabled disc to aid parking but if the few spots are taken, it sure isn't easy. have you tried that car park by the mill.

I rejected the train journey as I have done it too many times to have any faith in it. I have never, ever known it to be on time. It also involves several changes and there are very few trains a day that get back to my home town so I would be too restricted
.
Where's the butty shop? ..g.:
Artemisia, I'll look into the Ibis option - great tip
<Off to buy a cheap tambourine for the Ozgen workshop>

Re: Car parking for JOY?
I've always managed to park OK. Either for free round the back of the Victoria Hall there is some free on street parking or in the pay and display car park at the top of the same street. I'm usually there before 12 midday on the Saturday.

Re: Car parking for JOY?
There is a relatively not-too-small car park on Exhibition Road?? pay and display. On the other side of Saltaire Road (the one you'll probably come in on) there are some streets that aren't permit-only parking. They're about 10 minutes walk from the venue.
You need to get there fairly early for parking...or to leave yourself time to find somewhere to park. What time is your first workshop?

Re: Car parking for JOY?
I'm in one of the first workshops on the Saturday so I really will have to leave at the crack of dawn. I'm planning to go on the motorway to Bradford and then turn off. I know its not the most direct route but I really, really hate the cross-country route and I'm a more confident motorway driver. You need to get there fairly early for parking...or to leave yourself time to find somewhere to park. What time is your first workshop?

Re: Car parking for JOY?
Car parking at The Ibis would be OK I think as there are quite a few spaces and because there's the pub next door it's not only hotel guests that use it. I don't believe anyone checks anyway (but don't take that as gospel). The walk along the canal tow path is a lovely walk and there are normally quite a few dancers walking along the same route too - allow a 20 minutes to walk it (or amble in our case).
Is the Butty shop the one across the road from Victoria Hall where they do the huge and very tasty rolls (for us southerners!!) etc.Last edited by JillianaB; 09-05-2008 at 07:51 AM. Reason: Spelling mistake and I'm a perfectionist

Re: Car parking for JOY?
There are 2 pay & display car parks at JoY. The first car park is behind the Victoria hall on Exhibition Road & the second is a few streets down from the Victoria hall on Caroline Street. There is some street parking but you have to be early to get a place.
Hope you have all booked, workshops are now selling out.
See you all there.
