Aziza, turns out I'll be up there for your b-day pub crawl after all! I'm walking out the door right now, spending my last day in Illinois at Faire!
I'll have a sister & her two little ones in tow for much of the day but I'm sure we'll have opportunities to escape and drink some mead in your favor!

Wow! What a day! The last day of Fair is always very sad because we don't it to be over but we had a blast! This season just flew by. It was great to have Kimahri up there! Yay! We'll have to get you up there again next year honey! Once I got my camera I couldn't find you. I wanted a picture of your sexy self in a leather corset. ;-) Yow! I got to spend some more time with my bestest friend Maena before she flys away again. :-( I miss you already. xoxo I met a new friend. Hi Angie! All in all, it was a fantastic day (except for the nasty mosquito's. Ouch. I look forward to next year. Huzzah!!

Awesome Drum Jam
Was that not one of the most awesome drum jams, ever?!? I sure am going to miss seeing everyone at Faire every weekend. I seem to hibernate in the winter. Of course there are always workshops and haflas, right? ..g.:
I hope to post of pics in my profile later today. In the meantime, I type a little, scratch the mosquito bite on the back of my hand, type some more, scratch, type, scratch, type, etc. I swear there was a swarm of them in my house last night...I got bit more sitting on my sofa than I did at the Faire! This is WAR! ,m::
Maybe I can zill them to death?!

It was so good to be back at faire Saturday! I bought a drum! (My friend David/Davido owns Heartbeat Drums, and makes all of them himself!)
What a fun time. I'm sorry I didn't get to see any of you, but I'm thinking of making the Labor Day weekend trip an annual thing. :)
I do have to admit, Saturday's drum jam was a huge disappointment to me. It felt different...and the mosquitos were TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!
no worries though. Still a fun fun weekend. :)

Okay, not to sound completely ignorant, but what, exactly, was the drum jam all about? My friend and I observed from the sidelines on Saturday, and we had no idea what was going on? Is it some kind of worshipping thing, or a celebratory thing, or just random dancing. I don't know... I was just way confused! Thanks!Last edited by luvnafctn; 09-07-2007 at 09:36 AM.

Well, in the past, drum jam has been exactly that: lots of drumming, lots of dancing...
Saturday was weird though. People have always done the random screaming bits, but it really felt funny to me this time...I know that some people use drum jam as some kind of "ritual" or whatever...I've never really been into that aspect of it...I just want to dance!
the drummers were not really "On" Saturday either. The rhythms were to simplistic. I want something I can dance and zill to!
I danced for a little while, but I couldn't handle the weird feeling I got...I stepped back and played my zills instead, and my friends and I left early.

I wish I would have seen you too! If I had used my brain to realize it was the first Saturday of the month, my friends and I would have come out to the Sphinx!
I'm definately thinking that Labor Day weekend is ideal for a trip home...so next year, I will be there! Who knows, maybe I'll see if I can dance at the Sphinx hafla next year! ;)

Sadly. . .this IS what it has become! A scream fest.
When they scream, I will put my hands over my ears.
When they join hands in a circle, I just keep dancing.
I don't know when the constant screaming started?
At the same time as Drum Jam,
they is another jam going on- down by the pirate ship.
It involves all types of musicians and dancers.
I may have to go to this next year instead,
as I don't see the screaming is going to stop.
The best time this year
(and now Kara is my hero)
is when the screamers started holding hands and spreading out
into a HUGE circle. . .
they started to push us back and out of the way!!
Kara said, "Isn't this drum Jam?"
and went into the circle and kept dancing!!!
I'm sure the center of the circle was not meant for the bellydancers-
but we all went in and kept dancing!
Drumming and Dancing is the reason Drum Jam started years ago!!!
As far as the drummers-
you really have to be right near your favorite drummers and follow them.
There are many people at Jam now who are Not following the leader's cues.
One of my favorite drummers won't come to Jam anymore becasuse of the chaos. He's going to the music jam by the ship now. . .
. . .maybe the bellydancers should look into this next year???

Okay! I'm glad I asked. I felt really bad because I'd told my friend that there was going to be a drum jam and that I had no idea what it was, but that there was supposed to be bellydancers there. Then when we sat down and watched, we were kinda... confused. There was not much dancing - just people jumping up and down like some crazy mosh pit, some guy grunting and running around the perimeter, and lots of screaming. I'll have to keep my eyes on the board next year so that we can see some real dancing!

It's actually worse. I think I said something along the lines of, "You don't OWN drum jam" and then burst through their worship circle. ,r:;
I'm all for freedom of religion but they just go too far. Imagine if a large group of [insert any religious group here] pushed everyone out of the way so they could worship in the middle of a crowded theme park. The screaming is also very annoying but I'll counter with my own zhagareets.
I've been dancing at the drum jam since the late '80s...probably before some of these young screamers were even born. I'm not willing to "move to the back" just yet. ,m::
I often notice shy ladies wearing hip scarves along the edges of the dance area, moving their bodies to the music but afraid to join in because of the screaming mob linking their hands together and pushing everyone else out. I used to be one of those shy dancers. Fortunately I always found a few belly dancers at the drum jam who seemed to encourage me and make a little room for me to join in.
I don't mind trying out a different location for the jam but hopefully word will get out and the people interested in dancing will find us. While often muddy, the current location is on the way out of Faire so it's easy to find. Of course the most important element of drum jam, the drummers, will also have to decide which jam to attend. .w.:
Oh, well. I still had a great time at Faire this summer. I can't wait until next July!
..g.:

..l;, ..l;, ..l;, KARA IS AWESOME!!!!!!! Oh man - I wish I could have seen that! ..g.:
What's sad is that I really doubt those people know anything about what they're doing. They think they are being all wiccan or pagan or whatever. One time last year when they were doing some ritual, my SO noticed that they were doing it wrong and actually *cursing* the circle. Sigh....

Ha!
I don't mean to laugh, but...HA!
I love it when people try to do something to be "trendy."
"ooh look, this is a cool wiccan/pagan/whatever ritual, I'm going to do it too!" and they don't do ANY form of research whatsoever.
*sigh* you have to love the uneducated masses.
