Question Belly Dancing Friday Nights in San Diego

    I am going to spend my bday weekend with my twin in San Diego the weekend of May 15th. We are going to see a flamenco show on Saturday at Cafe Sevilla (sp.?) and I want to see a belly dance show on Friday. Where is a good place to go on Fridays and is there any place with a live band? I would love for my sister to experience that (though we will be seeing one on Saturday during the flamenco show). She lives near San Diego State and works in the downtown area (the train station is across the street from her). Any suggestions would be great!,r:;

Friday night May 15 there will be a bellydance show at Vesuvio's Italian Ristorante. It's in the North Park area and they will have a live drummer. No band but it's fun. I'll be dancing that night also. There are shows on Friday night late at the Sapphire Lounge in Chula Vista. They start at 10:30pm I believe

We, Arabina Dance Company perform every Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm at Zorbas Greek Restaurant in Chula Vista. 100 Broadway, Chula Vista, 91910
    RSVP recommended for late shows:
    619-422-8853
There is a trolley goes from SDSU to Chula Vista. If you give me a call if I am in the area I can pick you up from the trolley station.

... May 15 we are going to have early show, and late show improvisational to live music with 3 dancers. I will be leading the show.

Zorbas has All you can eat, one of the most delicious/clean/quality Greek buffet in San Diego. Not only you can find Greek Buffet around but the taste of the food is very good. I am Turkish and I love the food here. They have dessert and also fruit bar as well.
Only $18.95 for entertainment and buffet. Cover charge is $10 if you dont eat anything.
Live music is with Bazouki player from Greece, keyboard player from Iraq...so the music is mix Greek, Arabic...and also Spanish, Turkish, Armenian as well.

Our choreographed dances are pretty good I have to say...we use a lot of Suhaila Salimpour technique, we have sword/candalebra/candle tray dance. There are always 3 of us either group dance or live music improvisational.

Thanks for these suggestions. I will talk to my sister and see which she wants to do. How far is Chula Vista? She has a car so we would drive there.

At Sapphire they have a DJ Friday nights (sometimes a band, I can find out) I will be dancing there Friday night (with another dancer, 2 shows).
I'll also be at Marrakech that night, but no band, so that's probably not what you're looking for.

My friend dances at the Cafe Sevilla show on Saturdays, you'll love it!!! I have filled in for her on several occassions, the whole experience is amazing! The flamenco dancer is to die for, I swear to God I was left speechless and in awe.

Marianna-Is she a bellydancer? My sister said on Saturday nights that there is a flamenco show and bellydance show at Cafe Sevilla. I am so excited! I showed her the options you guys gave me and we are going to go to Haji Baba on Friday. I am so excited. So any bhuzzers there that night, if you see a set of identical twins, it will be me and my sister.

Nadirah-What time should we plan on getting there?

Yes, she's a belly dancer. I am actually dancing at Cafe Sevilla this Saturday, but normally it's her.
It's a flamenco fusion show, I love it because it's so different. I have danced there about 3-4 times, and it was weird the first time. The music is not Arabic, it's Spanish. There is a drummer, but you pretty much get the beat from the guitar, somehow. Crazy fast.
I love it because you have to come up with a different way to dance. The audience is the best, very classy and appreciative. The flamenco dancer - oh my God, I can't express how awesome she is. IT was great to see: a dancer, the has stage presence, several personalities on stage, who takes you through a whole emotional journey. (joy, sadness, passion, drama, anger, emotional breakdown, happiness, etc). Something to aspire to.
And we are sitting on stage, (covered up of course) and when it's time to dance, you get up and dance.
After I saw her dancing, I was sitting there, thinking: how can I dance after THAT??

I believe the singer is related to the Gypsy Kings - he ssings and plays the guitar and you feel like you're listening to Gypsy Kings right there. You have to see it.

sorry has been busy, just responding you now. From downtown Chula Vista is only about 15min or less.
100 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91910
All you can eat great delicious Greek Buffet (including dessert/fruits) at $18.95 per person
Live music (we might have Arabic Drummer along with Bazouki and Keyboard player specialized in Arabic, Greek and some International beats like Turkish/Armenian/Spanish)
    Wood stage with disco lighting.
Second show will start around 9:30pm. We will have 3 belly dancers in a routine on May 15th, but come earlier to enjoy the Greek dancing and great food.

Then perhaps you can go to other places since they are later.

Just wanted to let you know that there won't be a flamenco / belly dance show at Cafe Sevilla on Saturday the 16th. I danced last Sat and I'll be there on the 23rd, but next week they'll have some other kind of event, I just found out yesterday.

Re: Belly Dancing Friday Nights in San Diego

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. My twin and I went to Zorba's last night. We had an amazing time!! We couldn't stay for the second show but my sister said she was so glad to go there as now she has a new place to go when she goes out.

Turkish Dancer-Your troupe did an amazing job, I took some pics if you are interested, pm me and I can email them to you.

Marianna-We ended up going to Cafe Sevilla on Friday night instead and OMG that show was unbelievable!! I hope I can have as much stage presence as that flamenco dancer and oh Bonus! They had a male flamenco dancer down from LA so we got to watch him with the house dancer.

Thanks everyone!!! This birthday weekend has been so much fun with my sister. We haven't celebrated our birthday together in years.
