Same here! Actually, did you dance at the January hafla at Alf Leyla Wa Leyla? If so, I was literally sitting right in front of you during your performance. Beautiful!

Is Raqs America happening this summer? The website still has info for 2009.

I haven't heard anything about Raqs America. I would figure they'd be advertising by now.

Here are a few tantalizing details about the Amel Tafsout workshops, August 28-29. I'm so excited about these classes! Still putting together final pricing etc for flyers, but here's what she will be teaching. Workshops will be at Kelly's Herb House, 401 Headquarters Drive, Millersville, MD. This is an intimate space, so we're thinking the workshops will sell out quickly.

10 AM– 12 noon Berber Shimmies! This AMAZIGH-KABYLE fertility dance comes from the North-Eastern Algerian mountains of the Djurdura in the Kabylie region and is performed with a shawl. This dance is very relaxing, earthy and healing.

12:30-1:30 Body art, Tribal marking, Henna and Tattoos (Feel free to grab a snack to enjoy while Amel lectures.)

1:45-3:45 Dancing to Rai: Rai music and dance are both based on improvisation. Dancing to Rai is having the fluidity and the sensuality of Arabo-Andalusian roots, the strength and energy of the mythical Amazigh priestess, the Earthiness of the African soul, the Inspiration of the Sahara-Desert and the expression of the great Mediterranean seaport Wahran (Oran).

ZAR-HADRA SUFI DANCE: SELF-HEALING THROUGH WHIRLING AND TRANCE
Experience an ancient healing ceremony similar to those performed by women in Egypt, Sudan, Morocco & Algeria. We’ll start with a warm-up, breathing exercises, body work and sound healing. Amel will then introduce the whirling/spinning. After a short break, Amel will give some background about the trance. It is crucial that if we want to ‘let go’ we need to feel ‘safe’ in the community as only a ‘safe’ environment can help us to release. For this part the students are asked to bring a light blanket, a long shawl and are invited to bring a flower for the meditation and some candies, chocolate or something sweet to eat!

I checked out the BDSS website, and it doesn't look like there's going to be a Raqs America event this year. I did read that they've got a new show that starts touring at the end of September, Bombay Bellywood. The explanation for the show is...interesting (and contains a few typos).

They really needed to seek my editing services on that one. Geesh.

Description:
Learn the basics of poi from twirls to spins to untangling a hot veil mess!
Eva has been spinning poi for 6 years, and soon after started adding larger and larger attachments to them, culminating in the use of full silk veils.
There will be a few basic poi sets available for sale. Bring your own veils. You can use rectangular or semicircular silk or semicircular tissue lame. If you're on the short side ("fun size"), please use semicircular veils. Colors are up to you, but having 2 veils of different colors will be helpful.

If there is time, Eva will also go over putting together a routine for performance.

The studio is not responsible for any sore arms, dizziness or bruises ;-)
