Just part of BellyPalooza, which has already been mentioned here, but I thought I'd highlight the subjects of the two workshops I'll be teaching:

1 - Sword Science - Shems will teach the technique, method and discipline of creating dramatic sword dance compositions for performance. Learn sword care, safety tips, balancing tips, choreographic compositional structure and ways to create strong visual lines. Some floor work and spinning will be included with easier variations provided where possible. Participants should bring their own weapon of choice. Open to multiple levels, challenging and advanced material will be covered.

2 - The Art of Improvisation - intermediate to advanced. Improvisation can be so much more than just dancing without choreography. Learn practices that help you add structure and emotional dynamics to your performances on the fly. Learn to break free from monotony and mush and instead embrace the advantages of being totally in the moment and conversing with your music. Shems's will take your through several topic focused improvisational exercises as well as teaching some technique and combinations to aid in your practice and understanding of good improvisational dancing.

Aela Badiana is hosting a tribal fusion event in Williamsburg with Ariellah and Fredrique Sept 24-25 in Willamsburg (show) and Gloucester (workshop).

Um, not sure where that came from, but she completely awesome! I absolutely adore her. Your best bet would be to look at as many videos of her on YouTube as possible. And there are two full length interviews on there that I know of. The next place that she will be teaching in North America is Ahlan Cairo Nights in Montreal, Canada in early November--check Little Egypt Home Page in about a week or so for more details, if you're interested (I will be there--yea!). Then she is coming back again in March 2011 to LA with Dr. Mo, then again for Ahlan Cairo Nights 2011.

Since my event the same weekend is sold out, I strongly encourage DC area dancers to go to the Leila workshop. She's fab!

FANTASTIC! I've taken from her twice before and will be glad to take from her again (and I'm picky!).
I think one of my fave things about Saturday's workshop was she would show a folkore step, then show the classic oriental, then show the modern Cairo style... so great historical/cultural knowledge along with nice moves.
The show was great- she is a beautiful dancer to watch (and her costumes are to die for of course).

The Amel Tafsout workshops this past weekend had everyone glowing. Everyone is asking when she will be back! Stay tuned for next year....

I added the Bellydance Evolution workshops and show that Sahara Dance is hosting Oct. 14-17. (Wish I had known about it earlier so I could make it to the show that Saturday!)
