Thread: Arab Dance Seminar, Nov 5-7 in NYC!

Who's going? I'm thinking seriously about booking myself in this week...I found airfaire for under $400, and well, I'm still looking for the hotel, but the workshops themselves are only $325 for the WHOLE WEEKEND! :)

Karim Nagi (big shock that I'm going, right?), Nourhan Sharif and a host of other amazing teachers....

Roomies? ;) I don't snore...

this sounds sooooooo fun! Maybe. I can't commit right now.

I'm seriously considering it. My family is in and around NYC, so I have a place or three to stay (big family!). I probably won't decide until the summer, though. But it looks fab!

This one is on my calendar, but I'm not sure my budget will stretch far enough. It sounds great!

This sounds great. I'll definitely consider it. I'm only about 5.5 hours from NYC. I believe Faten Salama is bringing Amel Tafsout here to D.C. around that time also. She just announced it to us today.

I can't pay for the seminar just yet, but Yasmin we can keep in touch about rooming. I'm pretty sure I'll be going there alone.

Hey thanks for posting the link, I totally thought I did that. lol

Lets definitely keep in touch, I found a hotel 9 minutes walking distance, but its $359 per night...so I still have some looking to do, and I'm bugging Karim about if any hotels will be giving discounted rates to attendees. :)

Hi Yasmin,

No problem, thanks for posting this. The whole weekend package is an EXTREMELY good deal, so I do plan on attending. Randa and Raqia are coming here to D.C. March/April (yea!) and taxes, so I should be able to register late May/early June.

I'm not sure how fast this fills up in the early months. .w.: Usually with big events like this, the organizer sets up a block of discounted rooms with local hotels. If we can find a hotel a little farther and just trek or take a taxi to the studio, it may be worth it. It would be 3 nights, right?

I'm going to send you a friends request so I can find you on here easier.

I actually just received an e=mail from Karim with a list of hotels, so I will take a peek, and forward the list on to you, to see what you think. :)

Yay!!

I went last year when it was in Boston. Wow. It's way more than a weekend of workshops - it's an EXPERIENCE. I learned so much, not just dance, music, culture, language. It was completely unforgettable. On the last day, we did some meditative spinning and a zaar, and it was extremely moving - I can't even give words to it.

Wow, Nepenthe, thanks SO much for the review...sounds amazing.

I really wanted to go last year, as Cassandra is my Grand-teacher. :) (my teacher's teacher.)

This year I have the $$ to do so (thanks to being an egg donor!), so I'm really excited to go, plus I've never been to New York.

I'm seriously looking at this, if we don't end up going to Maryland for Thanksgiving.

I'm thinking about it, even though I just hosted Amel this past weekend, I think I have somewhat of an addiction now, and if I just did Saturday and Sunday, it's only $25 more for Friday, so might as well do the whole thing...

I am thinking about this too - I need to wait a while to decide, though, since i'll have a new baby and I don't know if I'll be able to get away for that many hours in a weekend!

Closest airports would be JFK or LGA.

Yeah, I'm looking for good recommendations too that aren't an arm and a leg, the place I normally stay, for some reason is double in price just for that weekend :P

I can give you subway directions from the upperwest side if you tell me where the workshops are held.

Also check out the hotels in queens by the airport, it's not hard getting from queens to manhattan.

You could also check out Jersey City and Hoboken hotels, they are a quick PATH train ride to downtown manhattan.

Ideally, we would like to be close to the event since we have to stay late and get there early in the morning as well. Do you have a place you can recommend?
