I'm coming to Singapore
YaY!
I'll be there with my 15 year old daughter from 11th to 22nd of December. Anything happenning at that time or just want to meet up at a mid-east resturant or something, with dancing (hopefully)
I noticed on Hungrygowhere dot com there is a nice little Egyptian restaurant on Haiji Lane and a few other middle eastern restaurants on arab street, any dancing there? I plan to gain a a couple of kilo's eating myself silly through Singapore's amazing eateries.Last edited by nigma; 10-10-2007 at 10:49 PM. Reason: just adding

Oh lovely!! Singapore is so nice ... sigh.
For dancing did you meet Zeinat at the WAMED Fest? Her dance name is Samra so do a web search, I'm pretty sure she has a homepage. I think her shop is on Arab Street.
There's also a lady called Clarabelle (sp??) and I think Keti has some Singapore dancers listed on her A-Z page.

I have not heard (yet) about dance happenings here in Singapore for December but there are at least couple of restaurants with dancing and several dance schools to drop by.
For pure Egyptian style the best teacher is Claribel.
Samra owns a dance studio and small dance shop at nice location at Arab street (lots of Middle Eastern restaurants also at that area)
Yuki and her bellydancediscovery are really popular amongs local girls so if there is some small scale happening it is most likely organized by her and also most of the dancers seen in restaurants are from her school.
I myself cannot access it but there is this dance blog with lots of information about other Singaporean (and also Malaysian) dance teachers, schools and happenings so if there is something in December you will probably find it there... I will be in town at least in the beginning of your trip (before heading for holidays in Europe) so if you like to meet non-Singaporean Bhuzzer who just happens to live in this strange island then drop me a note

Jilyan i did meet someone from singapore but only very briefly and i can't remember a name.

Aw, visit to my homeland! All the links provided above are true ( Kahire, sorry I missed you on my last trip... I did go to that workshop that you linked to... the one with the Russian dancer and the Egyptian choreographer... catch you in March?)
The Middle Eastern restaurant on Haji lane is adorable! Don't know if they have dancers. But check out Haji Lane in general for cute, quirky shops run by interesting people!
Visit Samra's shop on Arab St. if you like, to say hi at least... when I was there there wasn't much by way of costumes IMO ( all touristy coin scarfy ensembles). I didn't get to take many classes other than those workshops but there certainly appears to be a scene!
And for a different experience of Muslim culture, go to Geylang Serai ( Joo Chiat Shopping Ctre at least)... the Malay culture is rich and wonderful.

Shimarella, you're making me want to visit Singapore again. I was there (too briefly) in about 15 years ago, and I would love to go back.

Yes, that is a lovely place and especially today on the eve of Hari Raya Puasa when all the lights are lit and there is lively markets around Malay area and also Arab Street. Unfortunately Samra seems to be very rarely at her shop but it is always nice to drop there by and see if she is organizing some happenings. At least Tamalyn Dallal is coming here after two weeks and probably Dr Hassan Khalil will return in January... I am still waiting for Claribel to announce some workshops as she has used to organize at least something with "Egyptian masters" and I wish there could be something in December...
So if any bhuzzers are heading this way I would be happy to meet as I am going to stay here at least for all the next year. You can also PM me about more detailed info of Singaporean dance scene as I try to attend as much workshops as possible and try to keep up what is happening around.
10-13-2007 05:50 AM #8Hi again
is Samra's shop open every day? I do plan to go there anyway. I'm not fussed about the dance side of things because it's a holiday and this trip is morphing daily and now, as it stands, the plan is 6 nights in Singapore then a train ride to KL for 4 nights and maybe on the way back a last night in Sing. or a stopover and photoshoot at Melaka. I'm reeeally excited about malaysia now too.
Kahire, I would love to be have the chance to meet and say "hei, paivaa" but I'm playing it by ear right now and when I have confirmation I'll PM you ..g.:Last edited by nigma; 10-13-2007 at 06:01 AM.

Hello!! I moved to Singapore a couple of months ago and am still finding my feet in the bellydance scene. I'd be glad of any information about what is happening and going on.
I am pretty sure Samra's shop is open everyday.

I was rather confused by this thread initially cause Nigma from Spain will be in Singapore this weekend for workshop and for a while, I thought they are the same Nigma?
Anyhow, welcome to Singapore!
Ritz carlton was featuring turkish dining just 2 weeks ago- apparently they flew turkish chefs for 2 weeks. Currently, Brio at Copthrone waterfront is serving Mediterranean cuisine but I think they will end by the time you arrived. There are dancing in both.
There'll be ongoing promotion here and there but Arab street is probably the best place to go, besides food, you can get lots of AB stones and beads for sewing. For Lebanese cuisine, you can try Sanobar at Boat Quay. They change dancers quite frequently and one of the owners is a bellydancer from Lebanon.
Unfortunately, I'll be away on hols in mid Dec too. If not, I'll love to introduce you to my dancing friends!Last edited by shashadance; 11-19-2007 at 10:45 PM.

I am quite confused about the course description of this Nigma´s ATS workshop - that does not sound like ATS to me:
"ATS workshop focuses on the study and perfecting finger cymbals playing and fundaments of body techniques. Technique drills will covered before the use of zills" ..c::
Anyway, I won´t be attending as I am too busy but Nigma was here also last year by Pyramid Dancer and she was nice, thorough teacher so I believe you can enjoy her workshops - and hopefully after these workshops BDD dancers also get some better idea of what tribal is as I have not seen much tribal in their interpretations ,r:;
