What: Drum and Dance to Promote Peace, Understanding, Tolerance, and Constitutional Rights

When: Friday, September 10th starting at 6:15pm

Where: East side of Church street between Park and Murray in Manhattan

Why: There is a wealth of misinformation, misunderstanding, and media-hype surrounding the building of a Community Center over the current 25-year-old mosque located at 45 Park Place in Lower Manhattan.

We decided to hold a demonstration to encourage peace, acceptance, and understanding between different groups of people and to show the rest of America that New Yorkers of various ethnic and religious backgrounds fully support the building of a peaceful community center that will contribute to the cultural wealth of the entire city.

As New Yorkers and Americans, we want to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11 while also reminding the country of the importance of protecting each citizen's constitutional rights. New York City thrives on diversity and we want to encourage the positive contributions of our fellow citizens.

This is not your average demonstration. We plan to practice our right to peaceful assembly with a Drum & Dance Circle that will include both professional and non-professional artists. All members of the community, who feel strongly about the issue, are encouraged to join the circle!

Members of the media are encouraged to come, photograph and record. We want the world to hear our message of acceptance and friendship.

Who: The event is hosted in part by Belly Dance For Change—a multicultural collection of poets, musicians, dancers and other artists who offer free street art and low cost performances to the community while raising money and/or awareness for various humanitarian causes.
