Belly dance show in Seattle?
I'm in Seattle for the next few nights and I would love to catch a belly dance show. We're considering the Moroccan restaurant, but is there anywhere else we should check out? Any haflas or events going on. I'll be here until Sun.
Also, if you know of any cool bead or fabric stores, you can let me know that too.
Thanks!

Fun! The Morroccan restaurants usually have shows at 630 or 830; Petra Mediterranean Bistro has *awesome* food and will have a dance Saturday night at 7:30p (the baba ganough is incredible).
If you don't mind driving to Tacoma, Halima's Spooktacular show is happening on Saturday as well. Just google Halima's Designs and you should find her website.
For bead/fabric stores: Display and Costume in the Northgate area of Seattle is really great and right aroud the corner from it is Pacific Fabrics. We of course have Joannes and Hancock Fabrics too. There's a cool bead shop on Roosevelt Way but I don't remember the name.
You can always PM or email me (malia at maliadances dot com). My schedule this weekend is jam-packed otherwise I'd love to meetup for drinks and a show!

And there was a store downtown, on Pine I think, that sold professional dance costumes. Anyone know if it is still around? There were a few Middle Eastern and Indian imports shops on the same block.

Re: Belly dance show in Seattle?
We have a couple of Moroccan restaurants in Seattle; Marrakesh in downtown Seattle and Kasbah in the Crown Hill area. I think Alimah is at Marrakesh on Saturday - she's always a joy to see. As Malia said, we also have Petra - who I think is having a haloween party on Saturday along with a show. The food is amazing there. We also have Caspian Persian Grill in the U-District, where the food is also excellent. I'll be performing there on Saturday at around 8:30 - I'd love to see you! If you want Greek, you can go to Spiros in Kent - it's a really fun place. I think there will be live music and dancing at Masalla Grill in Bothell on Saturday as well.
Wow - I just realized that we have a pretty active dance scene in Seattle. Yay, Seattlelites! So, there's lots of opps to see some dancing.
If you feel like a drive, you can go to Shipwreck beads in Lacey. It's a trek (about and hour away) but well worth it - the store is HUGE and filled with every sort of bead you could imagine. It's a costumer's fantasy land!
Welcome to Seattle! I hope you enjoy your stay.

Thanks all! We don't have a car while we are here, so I'll probably stick to the places we can get to with our free hotel shuttle. :) I'm excited about going out (even if that means I have to drag the beau).

Re: Belly dance show in Seattle?
SHOOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!!!

Andalee, I just found this thread, and I am so sorry to hear your plans were dashed because my show was canceled!!! I feel like flying out to NC just to dance for you! I will pass on to the owner this news, and how disappointed you are. Saturdays are rarely cancelled - I don't know exactly what happened. Did you have a reservation? Shoot, shoot, shoot.
With the economy hurting restaurant business, there is a propensity to cancel shows. I've been saying that that hurts business much more than owners seem to understand. My family used to be regulars at this restaurant until a show was cancelled after we had reservations AND had called in to make sure there was a show before we came to the restaurant. We left with both kids in tears when we found out there was no show afterall. After that, our family has gone back about 2 times. We would have dined there at least a dozen, maybe more, if it hadn't been for that disappointment.
Again, Andalee, I am SO sorry. Any time you are in Seattle, please feel free to come and stay in our guest room, I'll give you a free lesson, anything!
all my best,
Alimah

Re: Belly dance show in Seattle?
Thanks lady. It was hard for me to enjoy myself--it's so funny how dance controls our life!--but the food was good and the waitress was very nice. I made reservations two days in advance for 6:00 (we're early birds), thinking there would be a 6:30 show and I even asked the person on the phone if you would be dancing. He said you were scheduled to dance. At about quarter to 7, I asked the waitress when you would be coming on and she said 8pm! I thought it was at 6:30 and she said it was canceled because not enough people made reservations. She offered to let us stay until 8pm, but I figured the show probably wouldn't start on time. Plus the seats were uncomfortable and we had walked all the way from Pioneer Square to Belltown (on purpose, not because we were lost), so we were really tired. Next time, though. Next time I will contact you personally ahead of time...and there will be a next time because I am in LOVE with Seattle (it was my first visit). :)

Re: Belly dance show in Seattle?
Well, thank you so much for your patience. I have an idea! I am on two DVDs - Power and Passion (a performance DVD), and Meaning in Movement: Dancing with Musicality, Texture, and Nuance. If you email me your address, I'll send them to you for free! Not the same as a live performance, but hopefully it would make up somehow. I'm going to talk to the owner today about this. My email is: arabicviolinhappy at gmail dot com.
Again, thank you so much for coming to the show, and I am disappointed I didn't get to meet you!
best,
Alimah
