Can I just ask -- is this a modern fusion choreo, or is this based on folkloric Turkish dance? I am wondering because I've been told so many times that the whole "full-skirted dancer whirling and playing the tambourine" is an old stereotype. Can you clarify a little bit for me, please? Thank you.

this choreography is not done with skirt, we are actually wearing harem pants/vest with bra/belt when we perform this set. Choreography has modern movements and also a lot of authentic movements with some Romani gestures, tambourine is 90% used in this dance I would say, all the arm movements are including holding/shaking/hitting, turning with tambourine. There are a lot transitions, circles, stage covering moves, it is quite dynamic.
Real pure raw Romani dance is not this way, I would say this is quite modern and upbeat but all Turkish audience we perform for love this dance specifically.
It is a great troupe dance with a lot of changes, very smartly put together and executed I think :)

We are so excited to have the Turkish Romani and Turkish Dance taught at Wiggles of the West!! BTW Dilek won 2nd place in the Entertainer of the Year category in 2010 along with many, many other awards at other competitions.

Thanks Janie....we are very excited to be part of your event again. Truly, this choreogaphy and Turkish Rom is one of those workshops you can hardly find, not only it is not thaught much cause of the delicacy and authenticity of the subject, but difficulty to be creative for using tambourine and applying to stage for group.
Turkish Rom also is also quite hard subject to teach, earthy, playful, full of feeling, heavy on the hips, and extremely fun and authentic :)

Arabina Dance Company just won the prestigious competition Belly Dancer of the Universe, Group Category, 2011.
Our last piece of the routine was this same choreography with quadraple Turkish drop at the end....
We will be teaching at Wiggles of the West.
