Re: Carnival of Stars Belly Dance Meetup
I'll be there, and enjoy seeing folks I know and meeting folks I don't. Please say hi! I'm dancing Saturday at 1:45 with Danse Maghreb--Kabylie style. Dancing solo Sunday around 4:45. May try to hit some workshops, not sure what will work in my schedule yet. See you all there!

Re: Carnival of Stars Belly Dance Meetup
I'm dancing on Saturday:
Solo at 11:23-ish, and with troupe "Damascus" (Siwa) at 2:57. I'll be there all day Sat - I always volunteer for a shift (thus my early performance slot), and I want to see several dancers perform, including our very own Cory Z.
Shira - aren't you performing Saturday as well?
I'd *LOVE* to meet/yak with anyone who wants to come say "hi"! I'm kinda hard to miss, I'm the dancer with the beard...

Raks Africa has a couple of gigs scheduled for Saturday so we'll miss the great dancing on that day. But I'll be around Sunday. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you!

Re: Carnival of Stars Belly Dance Meetup
I'll be there on Sat to watch and hang out, then volunteering on Sunday and dancing at 7:37pm. I hope some folks are still around so I'm not dancing for empty chairs at that point!

Hard to say what color my hair will be in early August (I'm feeling purple coming on again) but keep an eye out for my peacock tattoo and feel free to say "hey you!" if you don't know my name.

Dancing solo on Sunday 12:54-1:00 pm, and also vending (Sunday only), bringing a few costumes to sell, my boyfriend's crystal "shoulder sweeps", loads of bindis and my own line of feather cascades & earrings! Stop by & say you're a Bhuzzer and pick up a free bindi! (Zorba, you get two free bindis, haha -- frequent buyer ...) Looking forward to seeing fellow Bhuzzers dancing -- ALWAYS a fun show. Pepper & Latifa work so hard & put on a fabulous show!!!!

Re: Carnival of Stars Belly Dance Meetup
Workshops start tomorrow!
THURSDAY 8/4
9-10:30 - Shira Skill of memorizing Choreography – Shira will help us begin this series with the street smarts needed to retain the best possible information! Have you ever noticed in workshops that people with "a dance background" in ballet, modern dance, jazz, etc. seem to be quick at memorizing choreography while those without this background find it more difficult? There are certain classroom techniques used in those dance forms that we can adopt in belly dance to build this skill in ourselves. I'll explore those techniques in this class.
10:30-12 - Ginnina Hip Tricks and Tune-up - Understand what it takes to execute some of the hardest to interpret hip movements. From famous dance stylings of legends Souheir Zaki to Randa Kamel to the 3/4 shimmy and more upon request.
12-1:30 Surreyya Turkish Cabaret to 9/8 music – It’s often been said Egyptian dancers glide, Turkish dancers Strut! Learn a sassy choreography to a modern Karsilama (9/8 rhythm) while honing skills to use your secret weapon – your hair! Spicy Turkish Roman steps and gestures will be reviewed. Floor work may be covered if time permits.
1:30-3 Helena - How to dance with Finger Cymbals Fun & Easy: Play finger cymbals and dance effortlessly! Have fun learning to play and dance with Zills! Moving the arms gracefully while dancing with Zills can be daunting. Helena is known for her strong finger cymbal (Zills or Sagat) skills. She will show you her technique to strengthen and polish your Zills skills and refine your body and arm movement combinations
3-4:30 Ginnina -Improvising and choreography: Really there is little difference and it is quite easy once you know how to approach it! Ginnina will share how she approaches each and we will choreograph something as a group.
4:30 – 6 - Surreyya Double and Triple Sword (but singles are welcome!) Scary, sexy, sacred – sword work is a must for the American audience, as well as audiences abroad. Beginners will dance with one, experts will dance with two and maybe three if we dare! Learn to master the edge of sword slinging. From framing to tricks to revealing to poses and postures, we’ll cover it all and develop some new movements together.
6-7:15 - Terry "Daret Al Ayam" ….Choreography to a favorite Oum Kolthoum Classic!
7:15 - 8:30pm - Helena Ab control – how to isolate and even roll quarters and fold dollar bills with your abs!! Manipulating the abdominals. Train your abs to do what you want them to! You will learn the secret of first isolating and then contracting the belly muscles, which will lead to belly rolls and flutters and perhaps to flip coins and dollar bills.

Re: Carnival of Stars Belly Dance Meetup
I'm thinking of doing a cane number - I haven't done one in awhile. I'll find out if it "feels right" when I practice tonite. Planning on wearing one of my "Troupe Damascus" costumes for the solo - the "Majida Dress" - will be wearing our new "Harlequin" costume for the actual Damascus performance - which has turned into a duette with me and the troupe leader, The Mighty Siwa.
The last time I did a cane dance at this venue, I was wearing a pair of harems with a "string skirt" over it - a VERY bad idea. The mincing cane steps caused me to get my toes caught in the strings/fringe! Twice.

Re: Carnival of Stars Belly Dance Meetup
In my hotel room resting a bit after today's workshops. Hoping to soon get a call from Surreya with word on what folks are doing after tonight's final workshop - I'd like to head over and meet up with them for some socializing.
I had originally hoped to take more of the workshops than I did, but my body told me to pace myself - I still have both days of the festival to make it through, plus the long airplane trip home.
