Thread: Hi from upstate NY!

Hi there!

I've been spending so much time dropping by Bhuz to read reviews of DVDs and music, as well as to glean advice on purchasing costumes, props, etc., that I thought it was high time to join the Bhuz community!

I'm so excited to finally be a part of this wonderful group!! ..g.:

What part of upstate NY? I frequently Amtrak through the Adirondacks b/t Montreal and Philly/Baltimore and I LOVE it!

I'm actually way further south and west than the Adirondacks. (I gather that anything north of the New York City metro area is considered upstate, so that leaves a lot of territory. ) I live in the Finger Lakes region, in a small town called Geneva, which is at the northwest end of Seneca Lake (the deepest and widest of the Finger Lakes, although not the longest...)

The nearest cities of more reasonable size (and more importantly, having sizeable bellydance communities) are Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca. Each is about an hour's drive away. That, actually, is the reason I started teaching here in Geneva in 2008. I figured if there were no dancers here yet with whom I could carpool to advanced classes & workshops, then I'd have to make my own bellydance community (just add classes, hip wraps, and shake vigorously). One of my intermediate students came along to the last workshop in Syracuse, so my plan seems to be working, if slowly. Mwuahahahahaaa! :zillevil:

I still miss being in a troupe, though. Some of my students have more than a half hour's drive to get to class in the first place, so no one (except maybe my 16-year-old student) is really up for participating in a troupe yet...

Incidentally, I'm also a fan of Amtrak, since I've often used it to travel out to Madison, WI or Ann Arbor, MI via the Lake Shore Limited, or down to NYC via the Empire Service. My trip back from MI after New Year's was delayed by 10 hours (including a 12 hour 40 min wait in the Toledo station) due to weather and mechanical failures, but they've given each severely delayed passenger a $75 voucher for future travel, so I'm still quite happy with Amtrak! (I made some friends along the way, too - otherwise I'm sure I would have been much more distressed and exhausted.)

Yeah, that always bugged me...l;, Personally, I only think of anything north of Albany as "upstate". Welcome to Bhuz. You're going to love it!!..g.:

Welcome - I lived in Rochester from 1994 - 2001! That was before I started BD, though.

I saw "upstate" and HAD to respond. I gre up in Vestal and lived in Rochester for a number of years before moving to Texas!

There is a number of dance related workshops/events that go on in Syracuse, Rochester (Goddess Hour Dance and Fitness Studio), and Buffalo!
