I didn't know Arabs invented bellydance - I thought it started out with gypsies who just happened to be passing through Arabic countries.

I believe bellydance comes from either Arabs or Turks. Tracing the Rom (Gypsy) dances along the trail, they don't pick up any bellydance-like movement vocabulary in India or Persia, it starts appearing in the Turkish Romani and the Egyptian Ghawazi.
With the interactions between the Ottoman and the Egyptians over the years, it's almost impossible to sort out the chicken from the egg. Maybe it was a synergistic thing?

I think where you believe belly dance originated depends of how you define belly dance...
Personally speaking, I thought it developed from Baladi dance to Raqs sharqi at Badia's club in Cairo around 90 years ago. ..g.:
