Hello everyone! Newbie from Michigan with a mad passion to master this dance. Started yoga training for Belly Dance and still looking around to decide on a teacher/class local to me.

Hello Luna - happy to meet you. It's funny the statement about the hand-shaped state. I worked with a guy who always said it was shaped like a mitten. So I guess lots of people from Michigan have the same story.

But when you move to another state and you hold up your hand -to show someone where in Michigan you're from- they think you're nuts. And most of them don't know there's an Upper Peninsula. What's that about?

I've actually held up my hand when out of state to show where I lived. Too funny.
CHAYLIANA: I am in Oakland County, the part where almost every neighborhood is surrounded by lakes.

Now, come on. WISCONSIN is shaped like a mitten. Michigan is shaped like a hot pad with a flag on the tip. :-D

Oakland County... you should check out Krysztina of Czigany Tribe. Czigany World Fusion Dance - Home They're in Chesterfield Twp, so that shouldn't be too far. I've taken hafla workshops with her in the past.

Also, Carnivale Mijnoon will be holding their next workshop/hafla in Warren on Saturday, July 17th. The schedule of instructors & workshops hasn't been released yet, but if you 'friend' Carnivale Mijnoon and/or Czigany Tribe on Facebook you'll get the info when it's made available. It'll be a great chance to meet local dancers & instructors.

Hey! I am in Toledo and do all sorts of stuff up in Ann Arbor/Detroit areas so hit me up sometime and we'll chat:)

Former Michigander here. Definitely there are troupes in the Lansing and Ann Arbor area. I used to live in Oakland County too (Berkeley and Birmingham).

Most of my family is still in Rochester Hills (but I couldn't stay; it's too cold there).

Yes, I still have family in Mich, but I too fled to warmer climates.
