Runa's Belly Dance Explorations

My Belly Dance Blog chronicles my learning process, thoughts, feelings, observations, and experiences as I learn Egyptian Belly Dance under the tutelage of Nada El Masriya and all my other great instructors at Hannan's Belly Dance Studio in Toronto, Canada.

  1. I'm a Bombshell Butterfly!

Thanks to Princess Farhana and Devilla's brand new Bombshell DVD,
at this June 2012 Egyptian Dance Academy's Gala,
I know I'm going to emerge from my baby-belly makeup chrysalis,
onto the stage, as a beautifully coloured Bombshell Butterfly!

While the Egyptian Dance Academy that I attend teaches authentic Egyptian belly
dance, it does not teach how to apply correct stage, nightclub, and photograph
makeup. Therefore since Sept 2010 I've been fumbling

What is the Egyptian Panorama - The Potential for Change!

The Egyptian Panorama is being billed as a: "Belly Dance Journey through Egypt at a Time of Change"

To translate this into everyday-average-people terms, this means that the production is a story that is narrated and enacted through dance and song. The main theme is the by-now-famous "Egyptian Spring". Hopefully you have been following the recent and ongoing Middle Eastern ...
  3. Nada El Masriya on Rogers TV!

by on 03-27-2012 at 10:11 AM (Runa's Belly Dance Explorations)
Here is a link to a recent interview Nada, the owner of the dance academy I study at did with Rogers TV. She does a little demo of how to do some simple moves with the interviewers.

She and the live band Layali El Sharq do a very brief and spirited Baladi demo.

Nada also talks about the upcoming production Egyptian Panorama here in Toronto. I can't believe it's only this Saturday, March 31st! Time is really flying! If I'm feeling butterflies, I can only imagine what the ...
  4. I'm going to be on CBC Radio - Here and Now Toronto - This Friday!

by on 03-26-2012 at 09:05 PM (Runa's Belly Dance Explorations)
Today I was very excited and pleased to have been invited to represent my dance studio as one of its students on CBC Radio's "Here and Now Toronto" this coming Friday afternoon, March 30 about 15 to 10 minutes to 6pm. I will be interviewed along with the owner of the studio, Nada El Masriya.

I think she might be talking about the upcoming production, "Egyptian Panorama" which will be in the Betty Oliphant Theatre this Saturday March 31st.

    I may be ...
  5. A sword-umbrella, a musician, a belly dance student, sterotypes, and the Egyptian Panorama all on the Toronto Transit

by on 03-25-2012 at 10:58 AM (Runa's Belly Dance Explorations)
Yesterday a very cute young man came up to me on the TTC and asked me about my sword-umbrella. It was supposed to rain yesterday, so I was carrying my big black umbrella. The handle is in the shape of a sword handle. It's realistic looking enough that it attracts a lot of attention, and a lot of second looks. I also get a lot questions and comments on it, unless the umbrella part is open and it becomes obvious that it is only an umbrella.

Anyway, after it was established that I was ...
