Hip Scarves for the students - who is your preferred vendor
I want to get some hip scarves for my students, they always request them. In the past I've just picked up a lot on ebay, but I'm not super stoked about the quality for the price that is available on there right now.
Who do you guys go to to get a nice variety of hip scarves of decent quality at a good price to re-sell to your students?
Also, I'm wondering about the crochet ones with the sequins as well as the Egyptian or Turkish coin style ones? Doe anybody know where to get those?
You can pm me if you want. or email me at shemsdance@gmail.com I'd really like to find the best vendors to buy from if I can.
Thanks a bunch!

I can't recommend specific vendors because the ones I use are in Australia, but perhaps you can approach vendors you know and trust and ask if they'll do a wholesale deal. You might find that the quality suppliers you do your own shopping with may be happy to wholesale, but don't advertise the fact openly.
I just bought a whole lot of gorgeous scarves from an interstate vendor who was selling at a local bellydance event. At the end of the night, I asked if they wanted to offload their stock to me at a discount, rather than putting it back on the plane. They were happy to. Good deal for both of us!

I've never bought wholesale, but Salome's Tent (Bellydance costumes, jewelry, music) has the best price on those sequin/crochet ones that I've seen outside of eBay. Like Jewel said, you might contact her and see if she'll do a wholesale lot for you....

These are very basic, but are worth mentioning since they're only $10:

I ordered a bunch of coin hip scarfs from the Bella shop in Belgium. The scarfs are super-sturdy and you can order them by email.
They also have very cute triangle scarfs in bright colors with beads around the edges (for teachers with sensitive ears
)

I just came back from Cairo and they are having new style for hip scrafs that are great. Took 20 for my dance studio, they cost 10 euro, they look like the coin ones, but the coins are plastic at various shapes, flowers, etc and they look great, last for much time, and doesnt make NOISE lol
They will show them on public at April's NileGroup festival, got them from the factory.
Go for them they are great.
Now beside them, my favorite ones are Bella's !!

My troupemate Tedi vends hipscarves, finger cymbals, music, and videos on consignment from Dahlal and earns house credit. One advantage to this arrangement is that stuff that doesn't move can be sent back and you don't have to eat it.

I use turquiose international. I have always found their merchandise to be high-quality and durable. They are a little pricey but there's no cheap fabrics and flimsy, mediocre coins. Their service has also been great. I have a wholesale acct and pay between $26 and $30 per scarf and use a 100% mark-up. My students happily pay for the merchandise even though I give them a handout with other places to buy cheaper scarves.

Babylon Breeze makes beautiful velvet and coin hipscarves, and her prices are really good: Babylon Breeze, Turkish Belly Dance Costumes - Factory Direct!
I've had one for five years now, and it's withstood heavy troupe use and has never dropped a coin.

I'm no help because I don't do the wholesale route...I scouted ebay and here on bhuz until I found all of my students great quality and inexpensive hip scarves. I spend way too much time on the internet though. *laughes*

Re: Hip Scarves for the students - who is your preferred vendor
I love MissBellydance - super quick service and their hip scarves stand the test of time!
However, I'm not a huge fan of the style of their hipscarves - they are the kind that don't have a thinner strip to tie, they are just the same width all the way around. Makes them a little bunchy/bulky.
My favorite hipscarves are from Kajal at Mode Mystique. THE BEST quality - they never loose coins because the coins are crocheted into the scarf, not just dangling precariously from a thread. But....huge but here....you need to order at least $500 to get the wholesale price, which wouldn't be such a huge problem if the hip scarves came relatively quickly. But, they are in India and they make things as they are ordered (they don't just have them lying around a warehouse) so it takes a LONG time for big orders to be complete (I've waited over four months for an order over a $1,000). So, the problem is you put the order on your credit card, and have to pay for it with your own money long before you can sell the hip scarves and make the money back. But, the hipscarves are worth it, IMO.

Re: Hip Scarves for the students - who is your preferred vendor
I just bought a couple of scarves from this seller on ebay HAND EMBROIDERY BELLY DANCE COSTUME HIP SCARF / BELT on eBay, also, Women's Dancewear, Dancewear Accessories, Clothes, Shoes Accessories (end time 02-Apr-08 21:45:00 BST)
I have one like this and one of the triangle ones.
They come from india, and they do velvet hipscarves as well. They ship to anywhere in the world.
The coins are metal and as good quality as those I have bought from Turkish BD suppliers (if not better actually, they seem to be drilled more consistently), they are crocheted into the scarf. I havn't had them long to say how well they wear, but they seem pretty tough to me.

Hi Shems,
I got several different designs available. I have a big shipment coming in and will be posting them after the April 12th Belly Dance convention in Purcellville, VA. I also offer discounts for large orders. Also somewhat local to you.
If you need an even larger order that what I can supply, Lucy at Scherezade Imports is the lady to talk to. She is in Oilville, VA - off of 64 near Richmond. Definitely worth the trip.
Cheers!
