    My dream.....but....

It has always been my dream to have a belly dance botique, with a studio in the back, where i as well as other teachers can teach. My husband and i have decided to get out of the USMC (YEAHHHHH) so in june 2009 we will be moving back to the states. He is origionaly from Charlotte Nc and that is where we have decided to move. SOOOO I have been looking (online) at different places to move in that area and we are thinking huntersville. (about a 30 min drive from the bellydance shop) So here is my problem. There is a huge bd community there, a very competitive one not to mention that the bellydance shop is there. I am a frequent customer and love the ladies that run it. so what do you think of all that? I dont want to be competition for them. I will be comming into a very estableished community. I really dont have to say much more, you understand my delima. What do you think???? suggestions, ideas? Help

Ooh, this could be touchy. Is there anything they *don't* carry that you could specialize in? I think you're too close to carry the same merchandise.

If I were doing this, I would contact the existing shop, explain this dream, and see if there's a way that both shops could co-exist peacefully. They might have suggestions for types of merchandise that they don't carry.

Another idea is to make your store a BD consignment shop rather than a regular retail store. This should generate foot traffic -- everyone loves a bargain! It might also be a good way to become a valuable part of the established BD community. Just some thoughts.

I have considered this, i could sell some begginers stuff and high end used costumes. we plan to live on the other side of town but still, i dont want to make trouble for anyone, but i do havem my dream. Which i am in the position to do (once we get home) unfortunately the bds does sell just about everything with the exception of isis wings. They do not sell used costumes so that could be the way to go!!!

    Annwyn,

I highly recommend not competing but finding a way to collaborate. if you can find a way to support each other then both will benefit from driving traffic to the "other guy."

Sounds like you're on the right track with your thoughts, and of course, you shouldn't give up your dream - but there's a way to make it a win-win.

And, congrats on getting out of the military and starting a new life. NC is one of the only places I'd consider moving from Southern California. I have my eye on Chapel Hill...it's my dream to go to UNC.

    I have an idea!

Move to Greenville, SC! It's an hour and a half from Charlotte and our BD is growing. There's lots of potential here and no BD shops or suppliers. We'd love to have you and Greenville is gorgeous and growing!

    Just an idea!

THe other possibility is if your shop was more internet based, as opposed to store front, people may feel less intimidated or threatened.

Also, if the store sells mainly Cab, could you consentrate on Tribal?

    Just a few thoughts.
