Free Classes for ad space
Does anyone do this? An advertiser just wrote me about letting his wife come to my class in return for a prominent space on his website.

Depends how much relevant traffic his site will get. If his website has a Google PageRank value of 3 or less then it's only a small website that is not worth dealing with.
Type his url at Google PageRank Checker - Check Google page rank of any web pages
If you check Bhuz, it has a PR of 4. It's also on topic.

Re: Free Classes for ad space
It's a 4.
My classes cap around 10 (because of space). I'm just wondering if it's worth it to me to give away 10% or more of a class.
And I was wondering if anyone does this, what are the "rules?"

Re: Free Classes for ad space
I used to do a lot of trades in my previous business -- and I got asked to do a LOT more than what I did.
My rule of thumb was 'only trade for things we were going to buy anyway.' So trading for maid service to clean the offices made loads of sense, but trading for circus tickets didn't.
So.... were you going to pay for online advertising?

Re: Free Classes for ad space
No, I wasn't. And I guess that's the bottom line.
There are a lot of free entertainment forums that I've posted about classes on and I've had some students write me from there. Myspace and facebook have worked for me too.
And word of mouth has brought me a lot of my students.
I'm at the point now where I almost feel like I could run out of studio space (but I don't think I want to open any more classes right now).

Re: Free Classes for ad space
I know several dancers who do barters and are very happy with the results. I think it's a great idea so long as you feel the item/service being offered is valuable enough to be worth it. Since you said above that you don't really need ad space, and wouldn't have considered buying it otherwise, it sounds like this particular one isn't the right fit. But it may be worth considering other barter opportunities in the future.

My mom taught her dentist's wife in exchange for dental work. It was a win-win. Hmmm . . . I need to ask her how that whole thing happened in the first place???

I think if you put an actual dollar vaule on you services and then his. YOu can then trade based on that, make sure its a even trade. Thats what I do with my hotel rooms all the time, and I work for a big hotel chain. As long as the price for the trade is the some as the going rate for the room, its all good.

barter can be cool if you feel you can benefit from it. My husband does IT work for a Chiropractor. In turn, we get free adjustments. I really like that one. It all depends if the barter has "value" to you. And what that "value" is.
