Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
Hey all:
Have any of you bought this video camera?
Flip Video - Ultra Series
I think it looks WICKED cool, and it's a nice $149. I'm thinking of buying it to tape my performances and such, so let me know if you have any reviews/comments.
Thanks!

I was just given one, and it's great. Couldn't be easier to use.

I think that's what Rosie O'Donnell was raving about on the Rachel Ray show this morning. I wasn't really paying attention, but I'm pretty sure that's what she was talking about. She loved it!

Yay! OK, husband and I are buying a house, otherwise I'd go buy it right now! But it's now on my list for birthday gift ideas. :D

Re: Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
I have the basic one, it's pretty useful. I've filmed at the All Seasons Hafla a few times, though I have to get the video's to the performers. For the cheaper one the quality is about what you see on YouTube, maybe a bit better. I wanted it primarily as a learning tool, for videotaping myself and our troupe, which I haven't done yet because we really haven't had the time to sit down for some intense video/pick it apart sessions.

Re: Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
For those who have it... I've read some on-line reviews that say it's not good in low light and that they have had trouble with the software. So... how much light do you need to get a decent picture? Any problems with getting the picture "out".
I have a gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket and I'm thinking this is what I've been looking for. TIA.

Re: Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
I absolutely love mine! I have the first model that came out. Mine only has 30 minutes of recording time and there is no way to plug any card in to extend that. So if you have a choice between the 30 and 60 minute one, I'd go for the 60 min.
Just plug into your computer, edit, save, then straight to youtube. Really simple program.
As far as low light, it does get kind of grainy, but for the price.... Here is what it looks like with really low light:

Re: Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
That's really nice quality, especially given the lighting conditions. Gotta get me one of those.
Really nice dancing, too! You look great!

Re: Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
It isn't a spiffy as the Flip, but I got the Polaroid version which works nicely too, for about half the price (Amazon.com: Polaroid 3.0 MP Digital Video Camera with 2.4" TFT LCD Display - CAA-03040S: Camera & Photo. I always wanted a Flip but couldn't justify the price, so this is a nice option.

Oh, wicked cool! I'm most concerned with ease of uploading files to youtube -- is it easy w/ the Polaroid?

It is cheap. But if you already have a newish digital still compact camera, it's more than likely it also does video as well.

Re: Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
That's just it -- I don't. I have a 2003 camera that takes 10 seconds' worth of terrible footage with no sound.

Re: Reviews? The "Flip" Recorder
I ended up getting the RCA Small Wonder:[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P6J77G/ref=pd_cp_p_3?pf_rd_p=250314001&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000V1MLCI&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIK X0DER&pf_rd_r=1P3JRXK7RR4NW1M022E2"]small wonder[/ame]
It's about the same size and shape and has most of the same functionality as the Flip, but has two features that the Flip doesn't (based on what I could find): 1) The screen swivels out so I can easily record myself. 2) (more importantly) it has a SD/MMC card slot so I'm not limited to the 60 minutes (lower quality, long play mode)/ 30 minutes (high quality), but can get up to five hours with the card. Oh yeah, even with the card it's a little less inexpensive then the Flip.
I've had it less than a week, so I haven't done anything substantial with it, but so far, so good. It is easy to use. Picture and sound quality are fine for my needs. A friend is dancing with her troupe today so, hopefully I'll be able to put it throught its paces.
