Pay Arrangments when teaching out of another teachers studio
I was wondering what a typical arrangement is when teaching out of a studio that you do not own.
Hourly? Percentage based?
Also, are you required to carry your own liability insurance?
For a percentage based pay, is 50/50 typical? 60/40 with 60% going to the teacher and 40 to the studio?
Any advice or input would be great. Thanks!

I teach out of a Pilates studio. Initially, before I built up a student base, she charged half of what I made. Since the student base has built up (and will remain that way, goddess willing) she charges me a flat hourly rate.

I pay an 80/20 (instructor/studio) split for instructors teaching in my studio and I carry liability insurance for them and their classes.

Nilaja, I have heard liability insurance is expensive. Is $300-350 per year typical?

I pay instructors a flat rate for the first 6 students (minimum needed to 'make' a class) and a bonus per student after that.-
We teach at other facilities and every one has a different arrangement.
- Paid a flat rate to rent the studio, I did all my own advertising & handled all my own registration, etc.
- Did a 60/40 split. I do most of the advertising, the studio handles registration & includes the class in their schedule.
- I've also received a flat rate, but that wasn't a dance studio.

i have two situations. one place, pays me an hourly wage for up to 5 students. after that, i get a percentage of their tuition and I get more if it is someone i refer. another place, i get a commission of the tuition that is charged on top of a very very very low hourly rate. it comes out to about the same amount of money.
i dont have to do much of the advertising, they handle all of that and keep track of tuition payments, etc. thank god!

The Community Center where I teach pays 70/30 (instructor/center) to those of us teaching prior to 2007. As of this year any new instructors get paid under a 65/35 split. I am required to carry my own liability insurance.

www.myfitnessinsurance.com is the one i'm with now. My premium covers my studio as long as it's smaller than 1000 sq. ft., I think. They also let me cover additional insureds (other locations, part time teachers) for $35/year each.
They've just recently (since January) stopped offering the part time teachers at that rate, though, and now I'm not sure what I'll do!
