    Studio Rental

I am hosting Adriana Lira from Brazil for a weekend of workshops in August. I am looking into studio rentals in Manhattan, to make it easier for more people to come to the classes. I usually rent out studios near me, that I am familiar with their size, but now that I am going into the city, I'm looking online at different studios rentals.

All of the studios are listed by size (20' x 30',etc). I have no idea what these sizes translate to! I don't know how big the studios are where I usually teach. ..c::

Can you guys give me an estimate of how big a studio I will need to fit, lets say 30 people?

20' x 30' is 20feet x 30 feet. we go to a hotel and rent a large room for venders and room to move around, with a lot of parking. jini

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear in my original post. I understand that it means 20 feet by 30 feet. I am just having a hard time picturing that in my head - I don't know how many dancers a room that size would accomodate.

But I was just using that as an example. My real question, I guess, is how big of a room do I need to get to accomodate 30 dancers? What about 40 dancers?

i know there is a ratio you need per body (3x3? more for veil) but i can't remember what it is... maybe post to the student/instructor forum?

more importantly, figure out how many paid students you will need to break even (you didn't think you'd be making a profit, did you? ;) ) and be sure the studio is big enough to hold them all comfortably. it's always better to have more room than you need than not enough!

Unless dancers are going to be standing still in the tin-soldier position, a 3x3 space isn't adequate. I generally use 36 square feet per person: that's a 6x6 space.

So, a 20x30 room is 600 square feet; divide that by 36 sqft per person and, ta-da, you have room for approximately 16 people plus instructor.

To figure out how many square feet are needed for a particular number of dancers, multiply 36 square feet by the number of dancers; 30 folks in attendance would require approximately 1000 sqft.

Can you get away with a smaller space for 30 dancers? Yes, of course! Just be aware that cramming too many folks into a room with little space for breathing, let alone movement, will foster some resentment and dissatisfaction.

Listen to Deborah, she figured this out for my studio & she's spot-on.

I will add, though, that if the room is set up with the instructor along a wide wall (which I prefer, so everyone can see) there's quite a bit of 'wasted' space on either side of the instructor to take into account, so subtract a few to to be sure.

Also allow for chairs for dance bags or just dance bags on the floor. If you plan to have vendors in the same room allow rack and table space. A water table? Flyer table? Registration table, if in the same room as class. 6x6 is a nice minimum formula.
