If I have extra expenses for it, or I feel that it may be unsafe.

Re: late night gigs
I charge extra because transportation late at night is harder to come by. Besides, I feel like I need to be compensated because they require something extra from me: like skipping a good night's sleep!

Re: late night gigs
I generally don't like doing late night gigs. I would definitely charge extra for doing one. In fact I have a little "rule of thumb" that I've used in the past (and will likely continue to use). A gig that is outside my normal parameters of performance (distance, time of day, any extra "hassles" being required by the client) gets additional fees worked into its base price (mileage allowance, market adjustment for non-standard time of day, nuisance fees, etc.). ..l;, Some of these items (distance/mileage reimbursement) I am very up front about. Other items (nuisance fees) I simply add in and state the figure as my base price for that particular gig.
That's a little trick fI learned from the husband (used to be a house painter). Do you want to do the job? Then fine, state your standard pricing and go from there. Does it sound like a hassle and you don't really feel like taking it on? What price *would* you be willing to do it for? I can't even begin to tell you how many jobs he landed at these higher figures with having priced them in that way. Basically, what is the job (your time and hassles) worth to you?

Re: late night gigs
No, in Detroit late night gigs are the standard as most of the work is still in the ME clubs. Dancer typically goes on sometime between 11:30 and 1 a.m.
Even at weddings, if the dancer is doing a dinner show she probably won't go on until after 10 p.m.

Re: late night gigs
I think this is key. My instructor, who dances in Chicago ME clubs and at many Arab private parties, can't believe I don't gig past 9:00pm. But up here in the boonies, most of my gigs are for the GP who want a Belly Dancer around 7:00 - 7:30pm. I can count on one hand the number of times I've even been asked to perform after 9:00pm.

Re: late night gigs
Most of my gigs are after 10, some start at 12:30 or 1. So, no, I don't charge extra, because late night gigs are the norm in this area. (NYC)

Re: late night gigs
I do not consider as "late gig" anything before midnight! And I actually never been asked to perform later than midnight.... but I would definitely charge extra for it.

Re: late night gigs
9-10pm isnt late night for me either. late night is 1am-2am gigs. the one i was just asked to quote a price for is 2am. since it's in town, actually walking distance from my mum's house where i'll stay the night, i didnt charge much extra. i gave them the normal full price, while in town where i live, i otherwise sometimes give a discount compared with my out of town gig rate, but i didnt this time because of the late hour.
i think i would have quoted even more if it was out of town.
i'm used to gigs being anywhere between 7 and 11pm for private parties.
if only once refused a gig cause of the hour, cause it was 3am and two hours drive from where i lived (in a dance hall/discotheque).Last edited by artemisia_danst; 07-02-2008 at 05:55 PM.

Re: late night gigs
I tend to quote a bit extra for what I consider late-nite gigs, those after 11:00pm. And it keeps going up for every hour after midnight.
I know that it's very normal in some areas with high ME populations for the party to start rockin' after midnight, but in my area and in my experience that doesn't happen all that often.
For the "usual" GP crowd, I try to dance within 2 hours of the start of the party. Fewer drunks, which makes it that much more fun for everyone, especially me! ..l;,

Re: late night gigs
Here in LA because I have a car, I don't charge more. I am thinking that when I get to London and don't have a car, late nights - because I will probably have to take a cab home - will be more.
