Need advice on studio rental
Hi Ladies,
I am so terribly bummed and I am hoping someone out there can give me some advice. There is a studio that I use for privates that is close to my house and a reasonable rate. Well, they just released their fall schedule and every studio is booked until close!
So, I got on the phone and called every studio in the area (and I mean EVERY studio) and was told either no or the rental price was double what I pay at the studio mentioned above.
I am at a loss.
I lost my studio space!!
Any suggestions on what to do? I was thinking about approaching some of these studios and offering to teach there. That way, I would maybe have first dibs on space (and at a cheaper rate).
I know that I could pass on the rates to the privates but some of these spaces were $45 for a hour! That means I would have to charge the person $90-100 for one private session. What is way too much in the western part of Northern Virginia.
What have non-studio owners done in the past. Are gyms usually willing to rent space for use (even if you are not a member)?
Looking for any suggestions. Just so scattered right now...

Ask at local gyms, the YMCA (if you have one nearby), the recreation department and possibly even local universities...
I'm dealing with similar issues finding class space for things, so I feel ya!

What a kick in the teeth! Are you sure their scheduled classes will run? With this economy, I would bet that enrollment will be down. Not that I'm wishing any dance studio ill...
In addition to Miriam's excellent advice, you might also check out local yoga studios. They're often not mirrored, but if it's that or nothing, I'm sure you could figure out a way to make it work.

The YMCA will rent the studio to you for only the cost of a day membership. However, the studio is open for anyone to use even when scheduled classes aren't on - so, you could find someone else in the room upon arrival. If you want to block the room off for your own use - it's a lot more expensive. (I forget the rate)
I've had a similar issue with space rental - I kept getting everyone's leftovers.... and that's when they were available.
Where I did succeed however, were the local yoga studios. Tons of space available at great prices, and the decors to boot - are beautiful!
Why not give them a try?

Re: Need advice on studio rental
thank you! I wish there was a YMCA close by. There is a few towns away but was really looking for something close to home.
I will - though - call some yoga studios. That is a great idea. I also found a Karate/Fitness studio that I am gonna call. They have a nice mirrored fitness room.
There is a chance that the studio I rent will drop some classes but - I hate waiting until the last minute to see the schedule. I would rather prefer to have a place I can depend on and maybe use this dance studio as a back-up.
Will begin the hunt!

Re: Need advice on studio rental
UPDATE: I was so busy calling yoga studios and gyms that I did not look at what was in front of me. A chiropractor friend has a back room that he was thinking of turning into a "personal trainer" studio. Um - perfect! We chatted, worked out a deal, and badda bing badda boom - I have a place to use!
Thank you for all your advice. I am still gonna call a few more places to have a backup for my backup :-)
