Yes, I totally agree. I saw some burlesque done really well, and the lady that did it said I should go down to the place she normally worked. So I did, and I brought my b/f, and I must say, it was much more gynological .w.: that I had expected, and we were both a bit shaken up afterwards ..c:: - he was worse than me ! there is actually a place in some Northern state that has real places that you can go and *buy* a prostitute for the night...they have strip shows and secluded rooms and somehow this is all legal

no idea how....also it is owned and operated by a mother and daughter who both work there as well *barf*

kind of a 'waaaay off the side' side note....but just somethin made me think of that...

I think there probably are some places that are not just sleezy, gross, flesh barns that call themselves "gentlemen's clubs" .....but, in my opinion, are both still widely based on some sort of sexual performances....some more covered up than others I s'pose

Prostitution is legal in a lot of places, including New Zealand now. For years, though, we've had "massage parlours" which everybody knew were brothels. Numerous strip clubs had a "parlour" attached. I get the impression most strippers in my town are actually working girls.

Someone told me recently that the 'palm reader' storefronts beginning to pop up around the area are widely known to be 'hand job' places. I hadn't heard that before -- the one near me is so clean-cut looking, I'm not sure I believe it!

A friend of mine worked in London for a while, and they used to rent flats and have two or three "girls" working in the various rooms, plus a "maid" who answered the phones and took bookings. There were various euphemisms for various sexual acts, including O-levels for oral and A-levels for anal. Apparently they had a new maid once and, when asked if the girls did A-levels, she replied "er, they're very well educated girls, yes." It was all very fascinating, but I'm glad it wasn't *me* doing the job.

Back to Japan - my understanding is that the sex industry, like a lot of things, is (at least traditionally) really neatly structured, so you have the whole range of things, from machines to buy undies worn by schoolgirls for you to, um, smell, to bars where you just look at hawt chicks and drink, to places where you go specifically for a rub down and hand job, to places where you just have straight sex, to high level escort/prostitutes to geisha and everything in between. All of which says to me that you need to know *exactly* what the venue typically offers.

Yup! and it is pretty much everywhere. There are "snack pubs" (general hostess clubs) in every single neighborhood I've ever been in. These are pretty tame (less tame are ones with Philipino staff...and foriegners in general. I've heard that one of my former high school students is working in one now...sigh) and even I have ended up at work-party-afterparties at a Snack Club before.

Train stations with traffic? You're gonna constantly have "pick-up artists" working in pairs to actively recruit younger Japanese women to work at a sex jobs (high turn-over, not so many lifers) . One article I read interviewing some of those men stated that what they looked for was very stylish high-upkeep young women well decked out but about 2 months behind on latest trends...

Evening falls and there are hostesses and pimp-like procureers outside of stations waiting for you.

Which is why the idea of Japan having mostly posh chit-chatty hostess bars for gentlemen makes me laugh my booty off. It's a culture with a looooong history of sexual outlets and traditions.

For a sometimes seedy but not horrible look at the history and modern (80's) Japan, read The Pink Samurai. I read it before I had a very brief job editing poorly translated Japanese smut comics for an American market YEARS ago.

While in Japan, I've had one (almost virginal he was so innocent) friend call me horrified that his boss had taken him to a massage parlor after a drinking part and the girl had flipped him over and given him a handjob....and another friend (well enough versed in paying for sex and using protection and knowing what was what) call me seriously pissed off that he'd gone to a massage parlor and they'd given him a weak massage and no handjob at all! and they pretending not to understand his Japanese! He was very indignant and assumed (probably rightly) that it was because he was black.
