Creating A Website
I am interested in creating my own website, maybe there are others like me and those of you who have. I was wondering what are all the steps needed in creating one? I know what I want on it and I know a little about HTML, it's just the actual getting the site name, template, payments, all that which is confusing.

Re: Creating A Website
Well . . . . I think the best program out there is iweb for mac. If you don't have a mac, I used to use Microsoft Frontpage. I think Microsoft came out with a newer website program, and it's supposed to be better. I'm just not sure of the name because I am all up in the mac right now. Anyway . . . I find using a program like that is much faster and easier than trying to do it completely by HTML.

Re: Creating A Website
I went through yahoo! for the entire package. they have very user friendly templates. I am still struggling with embedding things such as blogs and galleries, but I am going to figure that out yet! Overall, it was very simple. they even take care of registry for you.

Re: Creating A Website
you have to buy a domain name and find a place to host it. I use icdsoft.com for all our websites. My hubby and I have 3 together and we have 4 others on our account. The format is soooo easy. I do everything the hard way and code myself with html. I start working on it in "textbook" which is in Windows. Then I save it as a html file. then you can open it and view it. You can then right click on your file name and open it in "textbook" and it opens all the code. You edit that. then save and refresh the other page to see how it looks.
once you have your page(s) how you want, you either
a) ftp to your server
b) go to your login and choose the upload option.
Your main page should be names as "index.html"
do some research on hosting sites..
**HTH

Re: Creating A Website
There's so many different options with web design, hosting, updating, etc, that it might be good to get hold of one of those 'Website Designs for Dummies' or 'Idiots Guide to..' books. They usually give a simplified overview of all the options, and you'll then know what you need to further investigate.

Re: Creating A Website
Good for you for doing it yourself! You can do it, it's just a matter of how high your frustration threshold is. I've built sites with Frontpage and will never do it again...just too high of a learning curve. It took way too long to figure stuff out and get everything "just so." Of course, once that site was up, updating was fairly simple.
I've also paid big bucks for specialized software that promised to make the whole process easy...again, big learning curve. I'm an impatient sort.
Recently I found the absolute easiest system you could possible imagine. It's all drag 'n drop. You can tweak things any way you want with custom html, but you don't have to. You can get a site up and running, complete with photos, videos, anything you want -- in less than an hour! And it's completely free! Both the software and the hosting. (If you already have a dedicated host, you can still use it...but you don't have to)
It's called Weebly. Here's the URL:
Weebly - Create a free website and a free blog
You can have 2 sites free. After that, you pay a little extra (like 4 or 5 dollars a month)
Whatever you choose, be confident that you can do this! Don't get overwhelmed by all the advice and possibilities...just start somewhere and keep moving forward.
Good luck, and have fun with it!
Mira
(no affiliation, just love that software...)
