    Fundraiser Ideas

My belly dance troupes would like to raise money for costumes, upcoming trips, troupe expenses, etc.

    Any suggestions for appropriate fundraisers?

    Thanks!

We have a formal "no belly dancer left behind" fund for workshops/trips and rehearsal time at the studio. So we put money in:

*When we get paid 50 bucks for 7 dancers doing a festival (or something like that), we put the money in there, rather than give everyone a piddling $7.14 or what ever. We always take a vote on it, and of course, if someone wants their 7.14, I'm not standing in their way.

*Also when I get a free workshop for bringing 6 or more students, I put that in the fund. I'd hate for students to think I was encouraging a workshop just so I could get in for free.

*From that fund, I've purchased wholesale zills and all of the profits from that go into the fund.

*Also, I used to sell bottled water at a different studio, and that went into the fund. The bank was thrilled with all the quarters, but that's how I started the fund.

These are more continuous fund raisers rather than one shot things though. So on that, let's see...belly dance car wash - tee hee - let me buff that for you *shimmy* *shimmy*, yah, a costume made of buffers and chamous!

    Bake sale? Candy sales? Shimmy-a-thon?

    Best of luck to you!

    Silent auction?

We had one at our last hafla, and it was pretty succesful. Items were donatated by the dance community...a drum, an old costume (my old costume! lol), a henna session, a bottle of wine, etc.

    :)

So *that's* that those "carwash" skirts are for!

The car wash idea is always brought up when we discuss fundraising ideas.

    So here's the question...

Do you think it would be inappropriate, offensive or degrading to belly dancers if the girls that hold the signs wear belly dance costumes?

We have our own belly dance t-shirts and thought that they girls doing the actual washing could wear a t-shirt and shorts.

Some of the girls still think it's a good idea to have the sign holders wear belly dance costumes to "promote our cause".

If they did wear costumes should it be student costumes, such as a choli, hip scarf and a skirt or would it be ok for some of them to wear professional bedlah?

Just wanted to see how other belly dancers felt about this and if anyone else has done this.

    Thanks!

I can't imagine standing in the hot sun in a bedlah. I vote for choli's, skirts, and hip scarves.

If you aren't looking for bellydance specific fundraising ideas, here's what always worked in high school for various orgs:
    -Sub sales
-Carwash ticket sales (a nice carwash cut us a decent deal)
    -Selling candy

We funded everything from yearbooks to a trip to Disney from PA that way.

T-shirts with a clever slogan can go quickly. My college debate team, I think, did well with t-shirts emblazoned with "Everyone loves a cunning linguist."
