Kittie's post reminded me: I make sure to tell students that I don't have a waiting room or anything in my house, so if someone gives them a ride back and forth, the driver needs to find somewhere else to go during that hour. I figured this out the hard way with a student who didn't know how to drive and had her boyfriend transport her. She honestly thought he could watch TV in my living room with my family while we had the lesson!

    A stendents view:
I do private lessons with a few teachers.I do need coaching every once im awhile.
I can focus on what i need to improve on technique , or want to learn a new prop
I am cheorgraphically challenged I always have a basis with music and such, but i always get a creative block and need the extra help.
I don't mind paying for choreos.,studio fee etc. I will pay extra for the help i need. I have paid up to 100.00 for privates. the cost of learning is worth it, and considering the amount spent on weekly classes. I think the money is worth it for the one on one attention.
my work schedule makes it hard for weekly classes. and usually this way i can work around my work schedule and get the training i need.
I always give credit on who worked on the choreo for me.I know i can't create them by myself. I'm better at improv.
Once the private is done. I do practice what i learn and add it to my dance vocabulary. It makes me i feel a better dancer and improved a bit more.

So I finally taught my first private tonight, and it was fantastic! I'm working with a total beginner, a nursing student whose crazy schedule doesn't work with normal classes, and it was fantastic! It was great to really be able to break down things with her and to really start off learning movements correctly and thoroughly. Thank you for all of your advice, everyone!

Just to add a bit from the Ballroom perspective...

At the studio I used to run, all packages were based on # of private lessons and group classes were included for free. The private lesson rate was $125/45 minutes. (yes, I did print that correctly). And students were encouraged to take 2-4 private lessons a week as well as regular group classes.

Anyway...just thought I'd chime in. It's always interesting to see the differences between another dance related business and the belly one.

    4. Are there any certain formalities/legalities/general protocol that are required

I'd love to hear from people who have given them and who have also taken them.

    Thanks
I've changed my privite lessons policy since opened my dance-theatre school.

    1. Book only students/dancers if they book and pay for 6 hours, this is the minimum they will see improvement. 30 euro per hour. I'm booked with privites till July 2008.

    2. Following the student

    3. Usual they ask me for dance coaching, correcting teqnicks, mistakes, idea's for choreo's overall a change on their dance. Rarely take beginers, they follow the class.

    4. Tax / Studio insurance

    5. For me as teacher are more relaxed and flexible from a normal class, cause I work on the student.

    6. My studio, usually mornings, and weekend's afternoons.
