I try to weed out men, but accept other dancers readily. Facebook has the option of keeping exactly what you want private, so those I don't know well, get approved but can only see dance pictures and videos - nothing else.

And I always find it ridiculous when people are proud of having 1000 Facebook friends, as if that's an achievement... Because some people will just accept anybody.

On Tribe I once deleted about 20 "friends" because I could not even remember who they were....

So don't be offended if I don't accept your friends request. I just prefer to stick to people I actually have met or have been in cyber contact with for a while.

On the other hand I think it's a great tool to find people I haven't seen in YEARS, like old school friends or that salsa dancer with the sexy voice

Not if the friends requests come from parts of the world where people are VERY unlikely to ever come to your show / hire you.

I've had so many friends requests from unknown guys who apparently just collect female facebook users with pretty profile pictures... What use should they be to me?

I am more open to accepting a dancer from Switzerland even if I have only had very few contact with her because THAT is a potential client.

Hey, send me a request - I won't turn you down! I would send you one but I don't know your profile name.

Absolutely true. That's why I have two different facebook accounts - one for "Shira Dotnet" which contains only stuff I'm willing to make public to fellow dancers, and the other for my real-world name where I post stuff intended for non-dance friends and family.

I use my dance identity to post stuff like information on the latest new articles added to my web sites, events where I'll be teaching a workshop, etc.

I find it fascinating that I've received a stampede of "friend" invites from the country of Colombia. It all started when I received a "friend" invite from a fellow dancer there that I do know from face-to-face contact and like very much (she went to Egypt with Rocky's tour group in 2007). So I cheerfully accepted her invite, and I guess all the other invites are coming from people who saw me in her friends list!
