Information on a Flyer
I want to make up a nice flyer to put up around town to advertise classes and troupe performances. I've never done this before and am wondering what information to include.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!..g.:

I love making fliers. :)
Key elements:
--A strong graphic
--Not too many fonts--and make what you do use readable.
--Even if it is local, put your city and state on the flier. That makes them usable for events you travel for, as well
--Contact info! Contact info! Contact info! :)
I like basic 8 1/2 X 11" fliers on bright paper. Cheap and easy to reproduce, don't have to do large batches at a time. If you are multi-tasking with a flier--classes and shows, for example--I like using boxes for text.
Collect fliers you like for inspiration. See how other local teachers (in all disciplines) are advertising themselves, and take elements that work from them.
Also, save all your fliers! It is fun to see where you have come from in terms of advertising. (Says the pack rat who has boxes of fliers from 1980s punk rock shows!:Aembarassed: )

I don't know if its helpful but I like to use post cards with a flashy image and basic info on the front and I stick a listing of performances that you catch me at on the back.

from a customer point of view. i like to see at least one picture on a flyer. that usually grabs me first and makes me say wow. not too many words and an easy to read font. also as many ways to contact you as possible. some people like email, some like phone, some may want to check out a website first.
as monica already stated- 8.5X11 color paper. you can find them at almost any office store and that way you can print them out yourself. and black and white still looks good on it.

Address format should be easy to read!
Event being held at:
ABC Studios
1234 South Street
Your Town, CA 98765
Cross streets: South between Yucca and Juniper
NOT:
Event being held at ABC Studios, 1234 South Street, Your Town, CA 98765, Cross streets: South St. between Yucca and Juniper
While the first takes up more space, it also doesn't get buried in the text. Which can be VERY frustrating.
And as said above, contact info should also be easy to find!

- Bare minimum text with catchy headline
- No more than two fonts
- Keep the fonts simple
- Have someone else check spelling
- Nice large photo
Oh, yeah, don't forget to include your web address and phone number!

If you're posting them on bulletin boards, rather than distributing them, you may want to make a line of tear-off tabs along the bottom of the flier with your website address or contact information. I find those very useful when I see a poster for an event I want to remember but don't have a pen with me.

Only post class times if they are permanent.
