Re: finally gave in to a MY SPACE
I like facebook a lot more than I like myspace.
To my eye, the myspace screen design is ugly to look at, and I've encountered some bugs in their software that drive me nuts.
Posts on tribe.net do get updated frequently in SOME tribes. The key is to find and join the tribes that happen to match your particular interests AND have activity.

Re: finally gave in to a MY SPACE
one of the issues with tribes also, it used to be down unexpectedly for days on end. this was back in the summer, i don't know if it's gotten better since as i've drifted away from it.
but that definitely did slow everything down, and there was (at the time) a lot of talk on different tribes about migrating to another community website thing that wouldn't be having those issues.
and yes, even before all those issues, there were some tribes that were sloooooooooooooooooow, and others that were really active, you had to pick up the right ones.

Shira, you don't have to use the standard MySpace design, you can create your own.
Tribe is terrible with posting and they are worse than MySpace. But MySpace is faster on fixing their bugs.
I am on Facebook too but it isn't as informative to me as MySpace. But I do have to admit that all of these networks have their uses and I have fun with all of them anyway. But I have to say that MySpace has given me the most contacts and information than Facebook and even Tribe because they have the largest network.
Have fun with it because I sure do! Here's my url: MySpace.com - Fotia-The Greek Bonfire - 92 - Female - Chicago, Illinois - www.myspace.com/bonny_dancer.

Re: finally gave in to a MY SPACE
Hi Bonny! Yes, I have customized my profile - you can see it here: Shira Dotnet | MySpace.com
But that customizable feature is part of the problem. When I visit other people's profiles with poorly-chosen wallpaper graphics or blasting music it makes my senses hurt. I often find myself really digging around people's profiles just to find the "send a private message" option. Some of the customizations that people do result in tiny fonts or low-contrast color combinations that are very difficult to read.
So far as I know, there's not a way to customize the home page - ie, the page that I go to for managing my blog, seeing whether I have new messages, etc. And the design of that page just looks ugly to my eyes.
Interestingly, Tribe is the network which has proven the most effective for me at posting info about workshops. Facebook looks as though it will be good too, though I haven't used it for that as much. Myspace has been the least effective.
I found that my network of dance contacts grew rather fast on facebook, but is growing very slowly on myspace. That makes me wonder if there are more belly dancers on facebook than on myspace.
I don't think of myspace as being fast at fixing bugs. There are two that have plagued me since September that still aren't fixed yet. I reported one and never got any feedback from myspace, not even an automated acknowledgement that they received my bug report.Last edited by *Shira*; 01-30-2009 at 12:45 PM.

WOW! They have not treated you very nice, Shira. I can see why you feel this way. And I have not had too good luck with Tribe. Good thing we can all access many different sites because it seems there is no one perfect one (except Bhuz, of course, being the most informative of all).

Re: finally gave in to a MY SPACE
Noooo! ;o)
I prefer Facebook. The networking capabilities are superior to MySpace's. If you are into bands, MySpace is the place.
If you want to create groups, events, invite the whole world and have THEM invite THEIR friends, Facebook is it. The coding is much better, too.

Re: finally gave in to a MY SPACE
A quick note about Tribe -- it made me a lot more tolerant of their downtime issues when I learned that they are running the site with a support team of, I think, one person. And they have improved greatly since this summer's mess. Unfortunately, I think a lot of damage was done and they lost a lot of people to other networking sites. A shame, because for a while there, Tribe was a good go-to spot.

Re: finally gave in to a MY SPACE
I'm on both; can't really see the sense in not being on both when it's free to do so. Just ups the chances someone will come across your business.
I like myspace's new 2.0 layout; I actually got rid of my old custom layout which everybody loved and went with one of their stock layouts because it was so easy to setup and simple. I think it's helping the layouts of other's pages as well. But, I"m more concerned with others being able to use my page to find stuff about me than I am about finding others info about them.
Facebook seems much smaller and harder to branch out to people on. More closed in. But still worth it.

The ning looks like it could be a good thing. MySpace has helped me network the most but I doubt I will ever get to Europe soon <lol> But the ning looks like it's more streamlined to be more directly associated with just bellydance - d'oh, I guess that's why it's the bellydancer space?

Re: finally gave in to a MY SPACE
I'm on both but admit I like myspace. I have gotten many students and like it in general.
If you'd like to friend me my URL is:
MySpace.com - Faaria - 43 - Female - BUFFALO, NEW YORK - www.myspace.com/faaria1
Don't know why but myspace seems a bit more laid back. I find facebook profiles to be busy for some reason?

I have a new MySpace profile, so update your contacts, people!
Carrara Nour Bellydance | MySpace.com
Still workin' on getting a FaceBook up and running. So little time for multiple lives and realities. Life in "real time" is stressful enough.
