Setting Etsy prices
Do any of you guys who have an Etsy storefront agonize over your pricing? "Am I underpricing myself? Is this ridiculously high? WTF is that seller thinking?" I did a lot of research comparing my products to other similar ones on Etsy, and set my initial prices according to that, but it's tough when your stuff doesn't look quite like anyone else's.
There are tons of threads on the Etsy Storque, discussing pricing formulas for hand-crafting--3Xcost or by the hours put into it, etc--but belly dancing crafts are definitely their own animal. How do You-out-There calculate your pricing?

Re: Setting Etsy prices
hi Clovis, I'm on etsy at Etsy :: akaisilks :: A'Kai Silks silk veils, scarves, skirts, dresses, soaps ..I did use guidance from others about setting prices on soap products but the veils I have had consistent pricing since I started selling years ago. No one else was selling double half circle silk veils in the size I make them in so I just doubled the price of what an average rectangle went for and have stayed with the same prices (heavier silk is more)
I've started to paint some veils and that required a price restructuring because quite a bit more work goes into them but I just priced them according to my own work .
They are each one of a kind so it's difficult to compare them to anything else on the market. Since you do ooak as well it may be difficult to figure out 'market average' ..instead go with what work and supplies you put into it :)
good luck, i love etsy

Re: Setting Etsy prices
Thanks for the reply, Jesennia! Your veils are amazing--I think I first saw them on Ebay a few years ago. I stumbled on Etsy a long time ago, and just didn't quite know what I was looking at, then the same person who introduced me to Bhuz suggested I open up a shop, since my website is fairly unspectacular.
I'm trying to do standard pricing for all my tassel sets and basic jewelry staples, but finding the right balance between affordability and "this really is unique, for the time being" is where I'm having trouble. Then I see that several other sellers have stamped the word "lucky" into a plain ol' penny, put a chain on it, and want $20.00! It's just worrisome waiting for my first real sale through there......c::

Re: Setting Etsy prices
I haven't yet posted my stuff to Etsy, but I'm selling the knit ponchos, shrugs, and knit wire jewelry that I make at Zahra and Jenna's studio in LA. I read a while back that the minimum price should be your materials cost doubled. If you put a lot of manhours into your craft in addition to the costs, the price will have to go up from there; and of course it helps to look at similar items (comparables) if available and price yours accordingly, based on quality, availability, uniqueness and such.
Please share your store with us when you're ready! :)

Re: Setting Etsy prices
Hi Nasila!
Oh, it's already open;) I started with about a dozen old pendants that never sold at the Veda salon where they were featured, and now I'm making tassels sets and new jewelry pieces to fill it with. One of my loyal customers just ordered a custom tassel set, and she let me list it as a reserved item in the Etsy store so browsers could see one.
