I'm starting to market my services as enteratinment for womens parties - bachelorette, baby showers, and so on. Any suggestions on where I can buy really cheap hip scarves for party guests to wear while I'm teaching their mini lesson?

I was going to suggest miss bellydance as well. I have been purchasing hip scarves for the last three years and I have not had any problems with them. They will even sell you at whole sale price, if you order $250.00, so you get them cheaper. Good luck!

If you can scrounge up a good buy on some non-raveling knit glitter dot fabric, you can make one piece no-sew sparkly hip wraps with car wash fringe, just with a pair of sharp scissors. You can whip them up (or rather, snip them up) in several colors and sizes for a festive and instantly coordinated group. This does mean there's no jingle, but some people without dance experience might like it better that way (the jingle reveals to others whether you're on the beat, or if you can shimmy or not!)

All I can say is shop around bc I found some hip scarves in a flea market here in Canada @ 7$ each and the quality is comparable to many online/ebay vendors. (Mind you, I've seen some real crappy ones at that same flea market, for the same price). Goodwill stores have some shawls and scarves that can be used for that purpose as well. (Or you could make them from inexpensive materials found at thrift stores). Trying to get all similar scarves is probably going to be more expensive. JMO.

I just have to speak up and say that I have a serious problem with the ethics of these people.

Back in August, I discovered that my ENTIRE teacher & performer directory from Shira.net had been stolen by these people and posted on their own web site. When I contacted them to demand that they remove it, they had the nerve to try to talk me into letting them keep it on there. I insisted that they remove it and they finally did.

Think of it this way - if they're willing to steal from me, how can you trust them to deal honorably with you?

I'd have to second Shira on the missbellydance thing- I've found them to be rather unscrupulous businesspeople as well. I tried to buy something from them ONCE - never again. They also spam forums and the like, so I won't do business with them. Since they stole Shira's directory as well, that sort of solidifies my opinion.

I ordered once from them and was very disappointed. I ordered a wave type model "leopard print velvet" hip scarf. It took close to a month to come. After two weeks, I inquired if it had been shipped and whther I could get a tracking number to see if it was stuck in customs. No response. I sent a total of 3 emails, all have been ignored. The scarf did end up coming, BUT: it wasn't velvet and the beautifully detailed variagated leopard print that was shown on the website wasn't what I got. Instead, it was made of the type of fabric that you'd make a toy stuffed giraffe from... And the print matched that theme. (And yeah, I did send an email to inquire about the return policy under such circumstances, but it would have cost me more to send it back so I just kept it.) Never again.

Shira, I had no idea that they had done that to you, but if the above hadn't been enough already, I def. wouldn't deal with them knowing that. (BTW, did they get your permission to link to your site? I see they have updated their site and your link is at the top.)

Rosette: that's a genius idea!

Another option is to ask your fellow dancers if they have any old hip scarves with missing coins that the might sell to you cheap or even give you. When my hip scarves start falling apart, they get put into the BellyGram/free use in class pile.

People don't need permission to put links on their sites that point to mine (I explicitly say somewhere on my site that this is fine), so it's ok with me that they link to my site.

But when over 20 html pages are copied from my web site without my permission, that makes me really angry!

Ooh, good idea! I'll have to try this for kid's parties.

I use non-coined hip scarves for all my hen's (bachelorette) parties and the like. I find carrying around up to 30 coined scarves too darned heavy. Plus I've noticed that all my hen's costumes with coins on them suffer from lots of wear and tear. People are just careless at parties! So instead, I buy cheap fabric scarves from local Asian discount shops, whenever I see them. Some with fringing, sequins, etc. If I have a big selection of colours people seem happy enough. I also bring along cards of cheap bindis to add to the colour without too much cost. I know guests would really love it if I gave them all a coined scarf to wear, but then I'd have to really up my prices for the cost and effort.

As part of my party package I bring along a coined scarf for the guest of honour to keep. That way there's a bit of jingle going on (on her hips and mine), and she gets to look 'special'.

i found some wholesale hipscarves on ebay. I got 8 scarves for $50.

I've never had a problem with missbellydance before. Usually I'd get my shipment in under a week. But now that I hear about Shira, I might give this new guy a try. He's been sending me emails for awhile, and he's local (for me). I believe the prices are per scarf.

Reviving this thread to ask specifically about Rasuls, as mentioned by Norma. Has anyone ordered hipscarves from him? He currently is offering the chiffon w/coins scarves for $7 each if you buy at least 15 (through 10/9).

Granted, everybody's gotta do business somehow in today's economy ,r:; I just don't really like their invasive approach to marketing and prospecting...

I know people who have ordered from this guy with good results. They're just cheapies, but great for parties and students.

I order my cheap hip scarves from rasuls only. I usually get the velvets to sell and the chiffon ones are for my hen parties. I really like the guy. He's very on top of things and fast with getting your order put though. I think he ships them out the same day as you place/pay for the order. If you need stuff he doesn't sell, he'll research what he can get and then get back to you asap. I highly recommend him.

Ebay seller TRADE_KEY@SBCGLOBAL.NET (can go to his ebay store or email him directly) has a lot of 12 that he sells for 50.25. It's 12.99 for shipping so with everything together it averages to 5.27 a scarf. They are decent quality for the price and super fast shipping. I've ordered three of these lots from them and had no problems. I've used them for birthday parties and had to order more because people want to buy them from me. I used to order from missbellydance, but this other place is cheaper and better quality. After what Shira said I certainly won't buy from them again.

Maybe you can try our company, but it's too far from China to USA, if the quantity is big, I think the price will be ok.

I really like Your Favorite Shop : Hungry Lion Boutique. They have some super cheap ones (about $7) to super nice ones(40+). They ship really fast and are very helpful on the phone.

What a great idea!! Learning to belly dance would be so fun to do for a bachelorette party.

I just sent this seller some questions. So you've had positive transactions with him/her? One thing I asked was if he'll sell in greater quantities than 24. I also asked if he has them in velvet as I prefer that because it's sturdier than chiffon.


Edit: Wow, he replied within minutes that yes, he has velvet. I really would like to see one somewhere other than in his sale ad. Do any of you have any from him and can post a picture?

My collection is actually made up of several different designs. Some are used hip scarves of mine, some are sequin knit, some are new ones I picked up, some are damaged scarves I acquired.

I like having a variety that fit many different body types.

EBAY is a great place to get smaller lots of scarves at great prices.

I get several yards of cheap (usually about $3 or $3.50 per yd at Joanne's), stretch, crushed velvet and chainette fringe in different colors at the fabric store. If you have a sewing machine, it's really quick and easy to cut out and hem hip scarves out of the velvet and put a row of fringe on the bottom edge. The scarves aren't noisy so people don't have to listen over coins, but you still have fringe to emphasize moves.

Oh and if you really want to do coins, walmart sells cheap gold and silver coins already sewn on ribbon for super cheap.
