Another Contract Question: Teaching In Studios
Hi all. Continuing the topic of contracts, what do people generally do for teaching in studios? I have a regular class that I've taught for three years now with no contract, and that's fine. But I'm about to offer a one-shot intro workshop at another place, that may grow into a regular class. Should I draw up a basic contract for the new place?
Thanks,
Leela

Re: Another Contract Question: Teaching In Studios
I have a contract for all of the places I teach. In one case it is their contract, but in the others, they sign mine.

A contract would be a good idea if just to ensure their liability insurance would cover you and your workshop.

I do not have any contracts, but I do carry my own insurance which covers me at each place where I teach

Re: Another Contract Question: Teaching In Studios
I have a very simple contract with my landlord. Just details how much my rent is, when its due, and what it covers. Also states that I am required to carry insurance in a certain amount of coverage. One page on their letterhead and signed by both of us (we each have a copy). It also states that I have a month to month lease and that 30 days notice is required to terminate the contract.
I'm huge on contracts. I rarely work without one because I've gotten burned in the past. Only client that I don't have a contract with is a company that is owned by my parents...and even that makes me hinky.

If you're just starting this class it's also worth including clauses on who can cancel the class and under what circumstances. ie: covering the possibility that the class doesn't get sufficient numbers. Can they cancel the class? Should they still pay you for a certain number of weeks?

I think contracts are a good idea always, no matter where you teach.
