One restaurant that I use to dance at and am now trying to get back in (they want me to re-audition, bleck) has auditions during student night. It's one Thursday per month and a regular opportunity for beginners to cut their teeth on restaurant dancing. The sets tend to be 6-7 minutes and are unpaid. This is the only "audition" I've ever done and when I originally did it I wasn't auditioning, I was just dancing at a student night.

I don't really have a problem with this as it is an established student night (like 10 to 15 years at this point) and I usually have fun seeing people I haven't seen in a while. It's a problem for me right now since I work Thursday nights and can't do the student night. It doesn't feel like the restaurant is trying to get something out of us but it is a nice way to see how the dancer works with an audience and whether or not the dancer WANTS to dance there.

Plus, while the dancers at the student night are mostly intermediate, a pro looks really good in comparison.

I auditioned "for free" a while back but only for the owner/manager and her significant other, in a private room (because the stereo wouldn't work in the other large room where no guests were seated - that was red flag number 1). They offered me some nights, but I ended up not working there because the pay rate was so very low.
