Who designed your web site?
Ok, I've been waiting ever so patiently for my friend to finish my new web page. But it's been well over a year now (more, if you count when he said he would do it between when he actually started working on it...) and well, I need to get it done. My current site is woefully out of date b/c I keep expecting my new site will be done soon so I've been lazy about updating (I will update my page as soon as I get a chance). But I'm thinking its time to look for a new designer.
I know this has been discussed before, but if anyone has recommendations on a good, reasonably-priced designer, please let me know. I'm in the market. I need a clean, professional look and I'm not interested in doing it myself so please don't recommend Front Page or other such software. Thanks!

Hi Aazura,
Zaheea did mine but she no longer does websites unfortunately. Since then I have learned how do do them on my own. I maintain my own site, have added pages and modified pics, and completely designed my troupe's website. I am also working on a few other dancers sites that aren't posted yet but will be in at least a month. So if you interested send me a message and we can talk about pricing etc.
XOXO,

I think that is a good idea, Aazura! :o)
04-12-2007 07:55 PM #8I did my own. I have done sites for a couple of other people, but honestly, it's really hard for anyone who's not a professional designer to design/maintain a site other than their own on the side, and most of us can't afford the fees web designers ask. I haven't even updated my own site in a couple of months...it's almost better just to get a really simple design and learn to update it yourself (of course then when you haven't updated anything in months you only have yourself to blame)...

I second doing it yourself. I did! Its not too hard for a simple clean design.

i did my own, and also do others. let me know if you need help. otherwise i concur with everyone else, learn to do one yourself. saves you the frustration of waiting for the designer. i am usually very quick, get changes done within 48 hours but it's still not instant. ..g.:
04-13-2007 09:02 AM #11I do my own, this way I can control it - update when I need to, etc., etc. I am definitely not a technical person - my husband bought me front page in 2000 for christmas, and the dummies book. f it wasn't for the dummies book, there would be no way I would have done it.
On New Years Day, I sat for 17 hours straight! with just bathroom breaks to learn it. My kids and animals were running around wreaking havoc - hubby was in charge! Next day my house looked like a bomb hit it. Plus, I dance every New Years Eve, so the house was already a disaster the next day.
That night, I had a nightmare that every time I had to go to the bathroom, I had to click on the toilet bowl icon on my computer, and when you clicked on it, stars came out of the bowl and it unlocked the bathroom door. I woke up screaming........l;,
BTW, my husband is a high level tech guy, but I wanted to learn, wanted to do my website myself, even though he offered to do it with all the latest bells and whistles, I wanted to prove that I could do it.
My website might not have flash, and all that stuff, but it's fun, readable, and mine, I tell ya' mine! ..g.:

wow maria, you really are an early bird! i'm only up because i'm going to meet joanne for workshops.
i don't like front page because it adds a lot of weird and unecessary code, but it does do the job. if you invest in a program, i would suggest dreamweaver. it's really easy to use, and if you choose to learn html you can check your code as well as doing the layout version (wysiwyg). good luck!

Yeah, my current site was done by a friend and I've been maintaining it myself for the past few years. But I want something new and different. I need a gallery page and a few other new pages. I like being able to maintain the site myself but just don't have the time and energy to learn how to build a new site right now. I'm hoping to have someone build me a new site that I can maintain myself.
I appreciate all the recommendations... keep em coming. I'll probably start to email some of you this weekend for more info on rates. Thanks guys!
04-13-2007 09:26 AM #14Hey Jewl, Talk to Joanne about my early-birdness. When we travel together, I am banned from speaking to her!!!! Not only am I an early bird, I'm a HAPPY early bird.....
Anyway, yes, you are correct about front page, I've been told by professional website people that front page is something of a pariah? correct spelling?
in the tech world.
Hey, I'm lucky I figured it out, even with front page for dummies....
I'll see you guys up in Evergreen maybe, I'll be there for the hafla and party.
I know you all aren't staying -
Bummer.....
well, it's not like we don't see each other...........

I let professionals do the screen design (graphics) but then I do the rest like filling in text and links, keeping it up to date etc.
I also sometimes design graphics, but that's more for my personal amusement.
My boyfriend created my oriental dance page.
But I have a new one that I am really proud of - it's basically just a starting page that leads you to other websites, but it's sooooo cute!

This was drawn by a student of mine who is a professional animation drawer. She kind of earns her living drawing Mickey Mouse :-)

Sorry for the thread hijack! ;-)

I designed my own site, but I must confess to having an inner geek
, so I was happy to spend a lot of time learning html and css...it was quite time consuming, and I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone who wasn't basically *interested* in trawling the internet for do-it-yourself info, etc.
If it's any help though, I use a freeware html editor called Alleycode (from http://www.alleycode.com/) and referred to this site a lot to help me with the glitches that occurred: http://www.htmldog.com/
There's a lot of info out there on the internet if you have the time to trawl.
Good luck!

One of my students is a graphic and web designer. She's animating little belly dancers right now lol. PM me if you want her email addy. I do my own. Nothing fancy at all, but it gets the job done! It's actually pretty simple with microsoft frontpage. But I also took a class in xhtml.

so much work
Maintenance is the real work IMO. Of course, I have an info site (bellydancela.com) so it's all about regular upkeep.
Aazura, I do my own but it's really just text - with nothing fancy. I would like to hire someone to do it properly, but I have a new strategy in the works that will take way that worry for me.
Anyway - all that to say - I really like the system I use through Yahoo which is its Sitebuilder program. Very very simple - to set up and maintain. No extra programs needed other than theirs. I host through them too though which is probably the only way you get access.

Tempest does good work. She did my teacher's site: www.mysticsun.com
and I'm bummed to hear that Zaheea has stopped but she's been crazy busy with a full time job these days, so I'm not surprised that she isn't doing webdesign.

I design too..I have a few projects on the go at the moment, but this is my main belly dance related site at the moment.

I do my own graphic design, though mostly I work with photos, I'm not terribly artistic when it comes to drawing, and my husband is the CSS expert.
