    Question Facebook fan page SNAFU

I wasn't sure where to put this post, so please tell me to move it if it needs to go elsewhere.

So, I started a facebook fanpage and so far it is a success! Go me! However, I use my gmail account to e-mail students and newsletters and so now when students sign up for a new facebook account, it imports their e-mail contacts and I show up...as just me, not Andalee.

Anyway, I would really like to keep my profile limited to family, friends and people I know IRL. I want students and such to become fans.

Anyway, so I have been responding to friend requests saying something like, please become a fan. One person said ok and just became a fan. I turned down her friend request. No big deal. The next lady sent me this personal e-mail all worried that she had done something wrong to offend me. I told her no, of course not, that I was just trying to keep my business and personal life separate. Unforunately she did not become a fan or come back to my classes. ..c::

Another woman said, "sure no problem" and then resent the friend request. Now I have another student (former) asking to be my friend and I want to get her to be a fan and not see my personal profile (it's locked). What is the best way to approach her? Could you help me draft a form response that I could send to students?

It's not like I am trying to hide anything, but I don't need them to see my mom's constant wall posts telling me all this family stuff and such.. Ya know?

    Thanks in advance!

You can create a friends list called "students" and then block that list from seeing parts of your profile you don't want them to see. Go to Privacy settings > Profile You can block certain friend lists from seeing your wall posts etc.,
I just have one profile. I find it less of a hassle to just use the privacy settings.

You can change the e-mail for your personal page/account. I think that will stop them from getting suggestions by address book. However, students and people who know you might still search. Just reply back with your policy and hopefully they will get it.
I have a similar policy about my personal page and some people just don't get it. One guy was offended that I wouldn't be his friend and asked him to be a fan, after I explained it he seemed more open but never became a fan. Oh well!

I have a list of making yourself private so no one can find you. That way it will help you from the hassle and you can find your friends instead. Let me know if you want it, but I must say it is pretty lengthy. It isn't easy being able not to be found.

But, Miriyah's way seems legit too. I never knew you could do that! Good move. But, people will still try to add you.

Let me know. You know where to find me.

BTW, I am a fan! woo!

I just refer people to my fan page. Usually it's just dancers who I get these requests from and they generally understand the need for privacy. If someone gets uppity about it, it's their problem, imo.

Could you just say that you really don't use your personal page (to the people you don't want to be "friends" with) and say that your fan page is really your active account. Say you log into that one more often, update it frequently, and it just how you keep in touch with your belly dance friends and students. It may not be 100% true, but it could prevent some hurt feelings.

wouldn't it be easier to change the email address for your personal one so it doesn't keep happening?

Slightly OT - Can you set a different email address for your fan page? I keep meaning to explore using facebook but never quite get the time...;-)

for the current ones I would just send a message sending them to my fan page with no explanation. once the email address is changed hopefully it won't happen anymore. Good luck :-)
