Thread: Affordable Music for Bellydancers

There have been many discussions about rights and use of music by dancers wishing to make DVD/videos of their work for relatively small sale numbers in their local area. Costs of well known music and the disinterest from big companies to deal with low numbers have made legal licensing of music difficult. The BDSS organization and our record labels receive a wide array of music that often is perfect for a bellydancer but not of sufficient production value for our front line releases on the Bellydance Superstars, Desert Roses, Bellybeat or Belly Bar series. We have structured deals with some of this music to make available to dancers who can afford $100 a track, but not $1,000. We are making more deals to bring in more music to be available at affordable rates. We are in the process of setting up access to this music on the new revamped BDSS web site which will be launched shortly. Listening to the music, getting a license and downloading it for use will be all there on the site. Easy, painless, affordable, and legal. ..g.: We hope this can become a valuable service to the bellydance community and help keep music use legal.

Hey Miles, we are looking for music in our DVD series. Is there somebody at your office that the producer can contact? Would it be Stevo in charge of this or somebody else? Is the music really starting at $100 per track? Is that for the rights in perpetuity? Also, when will the website be ready?

I think most dancers, who have produced CDs are willing to sell the rights to use their music in DVDs etc in affordable price - I know I am. You can always ask from them.

It's great what you are doing Miles. This way there will be more music to chose from.

After all this talk about legal rights etc... The one thing I REALLY hate are the teachers, who just burn copies from other CDs and sell them. We should refuse to buy them!

I never do that. I always send my students to the sites where to buy the music.

Miles - I think this is fantastic! The best part is, its win-win. You get paid for your music, unlike dealing with BMI/ASCAP (as I understand it) - and we get music that's actually affordable.

Mile, I think that's a great idea! Two dance teachers have already taken advantage of my reasonable terms, which are similar to yours, for use of my CD in local DVD productions.
