teacher pay
Hi everyone!
I am starting to teach at a new studio that has just opened. Locally we have observed a wide rage of pay being offered to teachers. The studio owner and I were wondering what is a typical rate of pay for a bellydance teacher.
Thanks!

Re: teacher pay
In my area, it varies from $25-60/hour, or 40-80% of the revenues, depending on who's doing what.
If the studio is doing all the advertising (biggest expense outside of providing the studio space), answering phone calls, handling registration, dealing with any complaints that come up, providing the music, props and lesson plans, then the instructor gets $25 or 40%.
If the studio is merely providing the space and the instructor is bringing in the students through her own efforts, handling registration, providing lesson plans, bringing the music and props, etc. then the instructor gets the high end of the spectrum ($50-60 or 70-80%)
Either way the instructor pays for her own liability insurance and is an independent contractor, not an employee, so she's also paying her own social security and other self-employment taxes.
If you go for a flat rate, make sure you specify your MAXIMUM class size (I've had venues try to make me pack 40 students into one class so they wouldn't have to pay me $50 for a second hour of teaching!).
If you go for a percentage, decide on your MINIMUM class size and stick to it.

Re: teacher pay
Depends i've been paid $30 per class $50 per class and $80 per class. I've also had a 60-40 split which can make my part between $20 and $200 per class. But i've heard of people here making $25 per class in a gym.

Re: teacher pay
Thanks for the info! The bit about the advertising makes a lot of sense, I did not think about that. Most of the classes that are to be taught at the new studio are 1 hour classes, taught once a week.
