We just bought a karaoke sound box. By itself it pushes enough sound for a smaller venue. For outside events or big rooms, we plug in external speakers on high speaker stands - similar to a DJ. We can use CDs or plug in an iPod, up to 2 mics. It's all very portable and easy to set up. The sound box was about $350. We already owned the speakers and stands.

Currently believe it or not I have a computer gaming speakers with a subwoofer, fits in a rolling case and works great in small-medium size spaces and was $160. However we need more volume as we move to more dense spaces.

We've been using a Peavey Escort system for about 4 years.

    Peavey Escort 3000 from zZounds.com!

It works very well for everything from small indoor venues to some outdoor stuff. There are some peformances we've had that really stretched the power (we needed something that went to 11), but it works for probably 80-90% of our needs. The *only* complaint I have about it is that when you pack it all up it has a handle on both ends, but only wheels on one end, so you have to look and see which handle to drag it by. And that's a pretty minor complaint. The unit has been abused, dropped, rained on, etc. and still performs like a champ.

It isn't something you want to drag from class to class, but for a performance venue it works great.
