    article on success...

A photographer friend posted a link to here:
Chase Jarvis Blog: The Secret to Success in Photography
addressing the question: "how to be a success in photography".
The answer however was not exclusive to photography; it was about success in anything.
It includes a Steve Martin quote about success in show business that he says nobody wants to hear ("be undeniably good").
Food for thought. What do you think?

Great article! And for those of us who live and breathe oriental dance 24/7, the 10,000 hours works out to just a little over a year, about 417 days or so, not so daunting after all

    Thanks for sharing!

The Malcolm Gladwell book to which he references, Outliers, is excellent.

Yes, 10,000 hours has a lot to do with it and there are other factors as well...

Unfortunately, Bhuzzing doesn't count towards the 10k. :(

There was a lot of talk about the 10,000 hours idea in an online writing class I took over the summer, so I read the book Malcom Gladwell was quoting ("Talent is Overrated" by Geoff Colvin). I'd definitely recommend it.

The ten thousand hours they're referring to has to be spent in "deliberate practice". DP means identifying your weaknesses (usually with the help of a mentor) and systematically and relentlessly addressing them.

So things like drills (focused to your specific needs), song mapping and analysis, etc. would contribute, but not Bhuzzing, or passively listening to music. Not even all of our classes would contribute, since they aren't dedicated to our individual weaknesses.

The 10k figure translates to 20 hours/week of focused drilling for 10 years.

On the plus side, 10,000 hours of DP is what it takes to be Great (i.e., world-class), not just good. So if you're not ready to put in that kind of time, a smaller amount of time spent on DP you can still get from "okay" to "good". And maybe still to "great", just much much later.

A classmate of mine from the course is working on a book about deliberate practice. He's writing it for bass players (since he's a bassist), but based on the drafts he submitted to the class, it's VERY relevant.
